As nurses we are unable to diagnose or tell anyone what the matter might be. Most symptoms or changes in our bodies won't be caused by anything serious. However it is always best to get things things checked out by a GP if they are worrying us, or they don't go away after a short period of time.
The most common cause for discolouration on the nails will be an infection caused by fungus, which often will need treatment to clear up. If the doctor is unsure or has concerns they may send off some nail clippings to be tested or they might refer you to a dermatologist( skin specialist) for them to assess the situation.
