Really sorry to hear your partner is currently in hospital. I hope he is ok and that he won't have to stay there too long. I hope you will find out more soon about what this shadow on his lung is. Having a medical background, as you said you probably know so much that it is easy to imagine the worst, but try not to read too much into this yet. It won't be long now until you get some proper answers and I hope that everything turns out fine for your partner and that he can leave hospital very soon and be back in the comfort of his own home.
