Shadowing on lungs

Hi yesterday I was sent for a chest X-ray due to pain under my left breast top of stomach which I felt was making me a bit breathless anyway I had a call today to visit my gp for results . I attended today and have been told there is some shadowing to my right lung unrelated to my pain . My gp feels I have an infection in the top area of my right lung and prescribed a week of antibotics and a repeat of the X-ray in 6 weeks time . I have no obvious sign of an infection just a mild occasional cough . I am asmathic who did smoke for possibly 25 years . I am not sure what I am asking but should I be worried ?

  • Hello Sezza and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you are worried about your health.

People do tend to worry about lung cancer when they have a shadow on their lung, but there is often a less serious cause such as an infection or lung condition. Easier said than done, but try not to worry too much.Your GP will want to see how you respond to your antibiotics and repeat the chest x-ray in a few weeks to see if the infection has cleared.

If the xray has not improved, your GP may recommend you to have a CT scan which will hopefully give a much clearer picture of what is going on.

I know waiting when you are worried is stressful, but hopefully you'll know more soon.Give us a ring if you want to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
