breast lump but breastfeeding awaiting 2ww appt.

hi all ive just been referred to breast clinic due to a lump in my left breast. im in my early 30s and im breastfeeding my 1 year old Still.

my gp said he cant palpate the lump with his hand only fingers so could be milk duct but it feels very different from rest of my breast. im obviously worried but hoping that as you can only find it with fingers that reduces chances of it being in my breast tissue and reduces chances of it being cancer. has anyone experienced the same thing?

  • I'm sorry about the worry this is causing Moomin but I noticed that someone who joined the forum this evening is in a similar position. Their name is [@malachimum]‍ and you can find out more about them just here.

I hope this helps and that all goes well at your referral.

    All the best,

  • Hi,

I am in a similar position and have just read 2 different posts saying it turned out to be an abscess. I'm not feeling any pain with mine and I didn't see any mention of you experiencing pain in your post?

    Hi Learay,

Welcome to our forum. There are a lot of hormonal changes when you are breastfeeding and, hence a lot of different reasons for a lump.

Have you seen your GP with this? If not, you should make an appointment on Monday morning. If you explain your worries to the receptionist, I'm sure that she will try to fit you in for an emergency appointment. If your GP is at all suspicious, s/he will refer you to the breast clinic.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

thank you for replying to me. I have posted about this in more detail elsewhere. I saw my GP and he wasn't worried, but he consulted with a female dr who said to call me and ask me to come back after a month. After this phone call I was more nervous so I asked her about it at our unrelated appointment, she said she wasn't worried either but will refer me to put my mind at ease. I have a pain in my back which is worrying me more, terrified that it's cancer that's spread but not sure if it's my mind running away with me.

    Hi Learay,

The reason for the female doctor asking you to go back within a month was to see if there were any changes in that time. However, I'm glad to hear that she will or has referred you to the breast clinic. You are always better to be sure than sorry. Of every 8 people referred to the clinic only 1 will be diagnosed with breast cancer, so the odds are definitely in your favour.

Once we get referred our imaginations tend to run away with us and we seem to get all sorts of additional symptoms which lead us to dark places. Please be reassured that it is unusual, not impossible, but unusual, to have pain associated with breast cancer.

I do hope that all turns out well and that there is a simpler solution to your symptoms.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you, I'm now going to be waiting for the referral to come through and hope the GPs were both right not to he worried. Hopefully I will be able to take my mind off it over Christmas. I think it's the pain in my back that's worrying me most, and odd sensations/pains in my hands and feet. I have read about bone metastasis a bit too much and scared myself into believing that the pains are from that. I don't think I'm imagining it but perhaps could just be my anxiety. I'm not sure that this could even have progressed so quickly from finding a lump a week ago to now feeling like I have cancer that has spread into other places. Perhaps that's why I should be telling myself not to worry.

  • Hi Learay,

We all find that our imaginations tend to run riot at this stage and often think the worst. Fortunately, this seldom turns out to be the case.
