Tonsil biopsy

I went to the doctor 8 days ago and was sent to emergency ent the same day because i had a painless lump on my tonsil, pressure in my ear and difficulty swallowing. I had a second appointment today and  the doctor said my tonsils are asymmetrical and he has sent an urgent referral for it a full tonsilectomy and for it to be sent off for a biopsy. I was so shocked i didnt ask any questions at all, i just sat there nodding and agreed to everything. Now my mind is working overtime. Im normally fit and healthy, rarely ill, dont smoke and dont drink a lot. Is he just being cautious? What are the odds?

  • Hi Halez and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like your doctor is being thorough which is good so try not to worry too much if you can. Hopefully this information about urgent referrals will help to put your mind at ease slightly but do give our cancer nurses a call if you want to talk this through with someone. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

I hope this helps and that you hear from some of our members who have been in a similar situation soon.

    All the best,

  • I’ve had a sore throat for 10 months and a cyst type growth on my left tonsil I had a CT scan with contrast all came back normal I was then referred for a tonsillectomy I went in on Monday, 12th August 2019 for surgery the registrar explained the procedures the anaesthetist put me under around 1:30
I woke in recovery & thought my throat doesn’t feel too sore then I asked the nurse is it done and was told the surgeon didn’t remove the tonsils so naturally you think the worst !!  The surgeon came to see me and explained that during the rigid endoscopy examination he deemed the oesophagus looked healthy no hiatus hernia he said the food pipe was a little narrow and there was a polyp so removed that.

He said the tonsils looked healthy so the growth was taken off rather than the scheduled tonsillectomy he said there wasn’t any point putting me through that pain so removed a “fleshy wart “it’s like a crater pit now but he’s the cancer surgeon. He said he’s 95% sure it’s none cancerous so I’m happy with that I go back in 4 weeks for the results from histology.

I don’t feel too bad in myself just severe sore throat and tired but I’ll be alright in a couple of days

I’m just so pleased at this stage, I can’t wait to get back to normality and of course fingers crossed For clear results In 4 weeks. I wouldn’t read too much into it go with the flow all referrals are precautionary so that’s not a negative I was fully prepared for the worst and couldn’t quite believe I went under but the surgeon didn’t extract them only the growth

Good Luck & try not to worry x
