Unjustly worried?

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here and am just looking for some reassurance?

I had a fairly routine appointment with Dr just over a week ago. Mentioned that I had a funny looking spot on my face that had a lump underneath it. Had been there a while but only recently looked like a spot (or a bite as I was told).

Dr didn't seem to worried about it, but would refer me to dermatology to "make sure".

Next thing I know I have a letter from the local hospital with an appointment for this Friday (31st) listed as "2WW Suspected Cancer - Dermatology".

I am now rather worried and over thinking everything! I know that it could well be nothing, but the fact that it is a 2 week urgent appointment has me concerned.

Does anyone know what sort of thing would happen at this appointment?

Apologies for waffling, just feel like I want to talk to someone about it?

Thank you :)

  • Hi doctorpudge,

It would appear that your GP isn't sure whether your spot/lump is something of concern so they have followed the NICE guidelines under these circumstances and referred you to a dermatologist. Because it's on your face they may have thought it needed seeing quicker than the usual 8 - 12 week dermatology referral. It may not be cancerous but, because it's on your face, there is a small chance it could be one of 3 types of skin cancer - basal cell which mainly occurs on the face as this area is always exposed to the sun - squamous cell carcinoma which again mainly occurs on the face - melanoma (which mainly starts from a mole so this is less likely).

At the appointment the consultant will probably examine the spot/lump with a dermascope which will show any cancerous or odd looking cells. If they are unsure or they think it's a possible skin cancer they will arrange for it to be removed and sent for biopsy as this is the only foolproof way to diagnose skin cancer. It may be removed on the day (if they have the time and it only requires a scrape or punch biopsy which can be done for a bcc or scc) or you may receive an appointment for surgical removal under a local anaesthetic at a later date.

Hopefully the derm will be able to put your mind at rest on the day but don't panic if it needs investigation. Many suspected skin cancers are found to be benign growths. If it's a bcc or scc they are easily treatable. Melanoma is a little harder to treat but is gaining ground on successful treatments and, on what you have described, there is less chance that this is the cause of your spot/lump. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
