Breast ‘infection’ not cleared by antibiotics

Hi,

i recently went to the doctors due to breast pain and swelling of the armpit. When I was inspected by my doctor she said she found many lumps which she thinks may be fibrocysts. I have been put on a course of anti biotics for 2 weeks, however I am near the end and the swelling under my armpit has not went down, and my breast is starting to look different to the other. The darkened skin around my nipple is a different shape to my other breast. I am only 21 with no breast cancer history in the family. I am just looking for some reassurance/help as to what will happen next if I go back to the doctors this week and the antibiotics haven’t worked.

thank you :(

  • Morning Lisa, I've been to the hospital this morning and they have discharged me. Doctor said it feels like the flesh is healing now and to Just contact my own doctor if it returns. Nothing came back on my swab.

  • I've had ongoing breast abscess since 2020 in my left breast had them drained so many times, it has now started in my right breast since August 2021 and since November it's been drained 9 times they told me I have a Bactria that shouldn't grow there they refused to do a operation and now been sent to see the infectious diseases doctors and had a biopsy , as I've been on antibiotics since November and nothing is working

    Hi Hayleylouise,

A very warm welcome to our forum. It sounds as if you've been having a very frustrating time with these ongoing issues. Have you been told when your biopsy results will be back? I hope that you don't have too long to wait, as this is always a worrying time.

I know that you want a resolution, but I sincerely hope that your biopsy is clear and that there is a less serious issue at play.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hey All,

After abit of advice, i have had a breast infection since July 2022, i have been on 7 different antibiotics and none have cleared the infection, i am back at the doctors today and i am worried they are just going to try and put me on anti-biotics again when they are clearly not working, i was referred to breast clinic last year and they didnt feel that the lumps under the infection were cancerous so was sent home to go back to the GP and since then they have done nothing, i am at my wits end, i cant wear a bra without being in pain as it rubs against the spots / infections, i dont like my partner seeing my breasts anymore and just completely fed up.

The infection started on one breast and moved to the other and started as septic spots which now leave holes in my breast and a few have scarred over then another infection appears next to it.

Has anyone ever had anything like this ?

    Hi NessaD,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

It is good that the breast clinic didn't feel that your lumps were cancerous.

It must be extremely frustrating to have had an infection for this long. Have you always seen the same doctor in your practice? If so, can you see another doctor and explain how much this is upsetting you? Have you had a swab taken? This is something that your GP should be able to do. This would identify the infection, so that they can prescribe an antibiotic which will work against this particular infection.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Jolamine,

Just after a bit of advice. I am 24 years old and discovered discolouration on my left breast 3/4 months ago. It appears like a purple circle but it started to spread under my nipple and then started to appear on my right breast. I did regularly check it but I never found a lump so I left it. However, in the last month, it started to ache a lot and would hurt from added pressure etc. This pain also started to happen in my left armpit. I went to see my GP over two weeks ago now who told me that I have raised lymph nodes in my armpit and put me on antibiotics to initially treat it as a 'breast infection'. I came off my antibiotics 4 days ago and I still have the discolouration on my left breast. I could tell that the discolouration faded a bit when I was on my antibiotics and the pain stopped. Although it has started to return.

I intend to contact my GP after the weekend, but do you think it's something to be concerned about? My doctor did say that she would refer me to the breast clinic if the antibiotics don't work.

    King regards,

    Katie

  • Update: My doctor has referred me to the breast clinic. I am a bit nervous about the tests that I will have to have. Any advice?
