Smear test results back not what I expected

I had my cervical screening letter back and it said I have an Hpv infection I have low grade dyskaryosis I am nervous I read through the leaflet they gave me it said I need a colonoscopy done but how do I know if i have high risk hpv or low risk hpv because it doesn’t state that it just says I have the infection on the letter but is not cancerous at this time I’m just really worried.

  • Hi, when was your last smear prior to this one?  I had minor cell changes 9 years and had a colposcopy and had  them removed.  They will probably just want to do the same with you. I know its a really scary time but its good they are dealing with it now x

  • this is my first smear i just got these results after having it for the first time it’s terrifying I feel dirty and gross and just petrified I need a colonoscopy they said they will send an appointment it’s just really scary. I didn’t understand what low grade meant is that less severe.

  • Yes low grade is less severe x

  • Thankyou I feel slightly at ease but still terrified I’m scared they will find warts that I may have not noticed or like something serious because it could be any stran of hpv but I have low grade dyskaryosis which I’m not even sure what that is I’ve tried looking online it doesn’t really help explain it as much I’m just terrified , my mum keeps saying if they were truly worried it would of taken them less time to let you know your results it’s taken me 3 months to get them back.

  • They definately would have gotten back to you sooner if it was anything concerning. Mine was minor changes and they left me 6 months to see if it would sort itself out but it didnt. I was terrified also thinking the worst. But ive had clear smears ever since then thank god. You will too x

  • Yeah I’m just worried I’ve had some issues which prompted me to go for my smear like painful urination they put me through urine tests and swabs and found nothing then said I need a smear and here I am I’m just so scared I really am safe when it comes to sex but absoulutely worries it could be something serious I don’t deal well with waiting and being patient.

  • Hiya,

I am sorry that you're smear results have come back abnormal, and on your first as well. I know how you feel as I got an abnormal outcome on my first smear too but if it says in your letter that it isnt cancerous that is a very good sign and I agree that the fact it took 3 months for them to get back to you about results indicates that they arent overly worried. They will have a better idea of what type of hpv you have after your colposcopy is done, depending on what they see, they may want to take a biopsy but if they have said it is low grade I doubt it, they may just need to remove a small amount of tissue that has been effected.

They wont necesarily find any warts, chances are if you havent noticed any they havent developed, HPV can lay dormant for years and show up out of the blue. I wish you all the best with you appointment and afterwards, im here if you have any questions or a chat :)

    Bex x

  • Hi :) I had this after my first daughter, I was 33 and had always had clear smears. Even though I’ve only slept with 2 blokes my whole life I get what you mean by the unclean thing I cried for a whole week! Then I decided to educate myself ... so remember over 80% of the population have hpv at some point, almost everyone who has sex has it at some point. AND although they say it can be cleared it’s not it kind of just lays dormant, which it can do for decades, or... providing you keep your immune system healthy, it can do forever.

The type of HPV you have been tested for with your smear is a high risk type (generally strain 16 or 18), they only test for these types not the one that causes warts that’s a low risk hpv. Just because it’s high risk doesn’t mean you’re going to get cancer they’ll just watch you a little closer. Me and two of my friends and my neighbour all have exactly what you have it is REALLY common so don’t feel alone. I’ve had this twice now and both times my cells have just gone back to normal by themselves which they normally do and even if they don’t it’s super treatable!

there are two things you can do to put this thing back to bed ... DO NOT smoke! And get your immune system fighting fit, it’s like any virus, get yourself healthy and happy and your body will fight it. Just remember this is so common, it’s not as scary as it sounds they’ll just treat you if needed and send you on your way xxx

  • yeah I get what you mean I’m just worried because the reason I went for smear is because I’ve been getting painful urination on and off , at first they thought it was a water infection then after 3 urine tests and a swan test they found nothing , then got put through for a smear and came back with the result I have I’m just worried they are gonna find something sinister going on because of the painful urination just so scared.

  • I really wish you the best, I have the same problem but I'm in in lots of pain during and after urinating, I am really in stress as the consoltant told me that I have got precancerous cells, and they took biopsy. Now I don't have any patience left till the biopsy results come back, please can you tell me what happened with you? Thanks
