Need to get if off my chest

I am so scared right now.  I am having a mole removed next week for a biopsy and it is literally all I can think about. The mole has changed and has a dark spot on it that wasn't there before.  The doctor says he's not 'overly worried' but want to take it off.

My mother died of melanoma and I can't shake this horrid feeling.  I had a baby 3 months ago and can't believe this is happening to me when I should be so happy.  I want to be here for him growing up.

My husband tries to reassure me, but honestly there is nothing he can say that makes this worry go away.  I know there is no point to this post, but I had to get it off my chest. It's going to be a very long few weeks :(

  • Hi everyone

I called the secretary again yesterday just to see if the results were in yet. She very kindly spoke to the dermatologist for me and called me back to tell me it was a "funny mole" but not cancerous and it has all been removed.  Not sure what funny mole means but I'll get a letter explaining, but she said it was nothing to worry about.  As you can imagine, I'm very relieved at the moment.

Thank you all so much for your support.  These weeks have been hard but you've all been a great help xxx

  • Great news. They probably mean it's a dysplastic navus (atypical mole) which look dodgy but is benign. They like to remove these anyway because, if left in place they have the ability to turn cancerous in the future. If it is one of these and if you have lots of moles don't be surprised if the letter says they want to see you again for another check in the future - they sometimes like to keep an eye on the rest of the moles for a couple of check ups. You can breathe again now & enjoy the summer, with sunscreen of course xx

  • Don't worry, I slap so much suncream on I look like a ghost :D

Thank you for everything. I've seen the support you give to many people on here, not just me. You're amazing.

You have a lovely summer too and feel free to message me anytime xx

    Hi Newmum,

I am glad to hear that you phoned your consultant's secretary and, that she found out that your results were benign. After all your worry recently, this must be great news for you.

Do you still need to see the dermatologist again or are you just waiting for her letter?

I hope that you  never have this problem again, but if you do suspect anything, please get it checked out as soon as you possibly can.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

I think I will get an appointment for a review with the dermatologist. The secretary said he usually likes to see his patients to check on the wound etc.  From what Angie has said, he'll probably look over my other moles too.

In the meantime, I am very relieved that this one was ok.

I hope all is well with you xx

    Hi Newmum,

You probably will. I go back tomorrow to see the dermatologist to check on my two biopsy areas which came back as clear.

I found that my dermatologist had it written my appointment letter and, on the walls of the clinic, that she would only see the lesion that was referred to her. My plastic surgeon was happy to check my other moles, but commented that he was asked to do this frequently and didn't know why. He is in charge of melanoma in our area, so I gave him a copy of my letter to act upon. I just say this, as you may need to insist that your other moles are examined too.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
