Suspected melanoma

Hi! I'm 24 and have a mole on my back that is being removed tomorrow and sent for testing as it is a suspected melanoma. It fits all the criteria of the abcde rules; it's asymmetrical, has a jagged border, is more than one colour, it's 9mm and is still growing.
Recently started bleeding but I'm not sure if that's because it is also very itchy and have been scratching it.

Basically my question does anyone know all moles that meet these rules cancerous? Or can some be harmless?

I think I may be over panicking haha

Thank you!

  • Hi Zefgirl,

Moles can be dodgy little things and sometimes those that look bad actually aren't, whilst those that don't fit the abcde rules ie. non pigmented pearl like lesions, can be bad. Until your mole is biopsied it's like asking 'how long is a piece of string!' Some moles can look bad and actually be a dysplastic navus - looks dodgy but is benign. However these moles have the ability to turn cancerous if left in situ so they are always removed. So as you see, there are 3 options as to what it might be! Hopefully your biopsy will go well and come back clear. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

  • Oh thank you! That has put my mind at ease quite alot! I didn't want to do too much googling on the matter as that can cause alot of un-needed stress!

Thank you very much for your reply! I will post an update to let you know the outcome!

    Hope you are well! X
