Post menopausal bleeding

hi I am 51 . No period in 3 years then stared to bleed heavily . Doctor admitted me for scan . Scan showed 6mm womb lining . Ovaries fine cervix fine have been referred for hysterectomy and biopsy . I am so worried .bleeding stopped after about 4 to 5 days . Has anyone been through this I am so worried at the moment thanks

  • Hi my post menopausal bleeding felt just like a period . I had stomach cramps and sore back lasted 4 to 5 days just like my normal period did even though I had not had a period for three years . Hysterectomy showed up everything looked ok no masses no build up off cells . My uterus lining was six mm should be 4. I am awaiting results from byopsy for this and trying to remain positive get them in a weeks time .

  • Well ladies my endometrium was 16mm so quite a difference.

  • Hi Luc50, your symptoms sound like mine at the moment. I do hope you have a positive result in a week's time. It certainly looks very promising from what the doctor said but I'm sure the waiting is awful.

I do have a family history. My mum's only sister had womb cancer and her dad's only sister also had womb cancer. Neither had had children which is a risk factor I have read (neither do I).

In fact my auntie only found out she needed a hysterectomy after being admitted to a trial - she was given an internal ultrasound whereas others were given blood tests or no preemptive treatment. She was very lucky to have been offered to take part in the trial, and to be given the ultrasound.

I've now decided to definitely go to the GP.

  • Hello all.

Looks like I'm playing the waiting game again.  I was expecting my biopsy results within 1-2 weeks of my appointment but have received a letter over the weekend (so nearly 3 weeks) with just another appointment date which isn't until the 14th June - no information about the results, nothing.  I was kind of expecting that the letter would give me some indication of what is going on and what might happen next.  Do they prefer to let you know things face to face rather than by letter?  Is it normal that I have to wait over 5 weeks until I am actually told what's happening - ie,whether I have cancerous cells or not and do I need a hysterectomy?  I will ring and check with the clinic tomorrow but I think they will just tell me again that they can't say anything over the phone.

  • This waiting must be awfull for you . I know how I feel and I am getting results a week later for edimetrial byopsy and hydroscopy for post menopausal bleeding . I went private as waiting was so long . I find the waiting torture as everything goes through you’re mind . I really hope you get your results soon thinking of you . X

  • Hi I was just wondering how you got on if you were any further forward after calling them . I go for results soon at 540 today and yeah I am very nervous even though he said all looked ok I still have that nagging doubt in my head that he can only see with the naked eye and a biopsy willl show more . Thinking of you .

  • Hello Luc50,

Wishing you the absolute very best of luck for today.

I called the clinic this morning - a letter with more information has been authorised to go out but they still can't give me any information over the phone so have to wait until the letter turns up over the next few days.

Thank you for your message.  It's so good to know you're out there!
