  • Hi, Im in the same boat. Im 53 and have been bleeding for 5 days now. Hve an appointment with consultant next week. I can understand your worry. I feeling very anxious.

  • Hello all,

When I experienced post-menopausal bleeding at age 44 (15 months after my last period), I thought it was a vaccine side-effect as it twice happened within 2-3 weeks of having my Covid-19 jabs (in June & August 2021). I only spoke to the GP 7 months after the 1st bleed after following the advice on the MHRA website. Saw a gynaecologist for transvaginal ultrasound within a week of the GP making an urgent referral on 7 Jan 2022. I experienced bleeding once again while waiting, as well as pelvic pain for the first time.

Fortunately there were no signs of cancer. Mine turned out to just be a benign polyp which was removed within 4 weeks of the initial GP appointment (on 2 Feb 2022). I opted to have the procedure as an outpatient instead of under general anaesthetic and it was relatively painless (having taken 1 paracetamol and 1 ibuprofen an hour before as instructed by the gynecologist). The polyp removal took only about 15 minutes, plus another 15 or so for the consultation before and after. Luckily I only experienced light bleeding for a few days afterwards. I  was off sick from work the following day and was able to work from home for the rest of that week while recovering.

Received the news that the biopsy sample from the polyp was benign by letter about 5 weeks later. (Hopefully the result would've arrived sooner if treatment had been needed.)

I wish everyone on this thread all the very best. It's an anxious time waiting for the results despite the fast-tracking of these cases. Xx

  • Hi ladies

I'm so glad I found this thread.

    Currently worried sick.

I was very constipated and strained a lot (TMI, I'm sorry!).

When I wiped I noticed a small amount of bright red blood on the tissue paper. It was from my vagina, and scared the life out of me.

I've not had a period in about four years, and my hormone levels point to post menopause.

    I'm 51.

I called my gp who said they treat all post menopausal bleeding as sinister! So straight away I was in bits and still am.

I went in the same day as requested and she checked my tummy and said it was nice and soft. She checked my back passage with her finger and didn't seem concerned. Then she did an internal (very hard to do as it is very painful for me and has been for years), took swabs, and used a clear speculum to look inside. She said I had some discharge which tbh, I've not even noticed. The speculum came out with a small amount of fresh blood on the side of it - not on the top of it which is what would have touched my cervix.

I had abnormal cells removed via a loop diathermy 17 years ago and all PAP tests since have been clear.

I've not bled since that night I was very constipated, and the little that was on the speculum the next day. It was a very small amount with no pain or any other symptoms.

But she's referred me on an urgent two week referral at the hospital for suspected endometrial cancer and I'm scared stiff! I was not expecting that at all.

Surely the bleeding would have been more than the once if it was sinister?

I've had nothing at all since then and it was such a small amount. I presumed straining on the loo had caused it.

I've also recently had antibiotics which always give me thrush. I've read that can cause bleeding, or am I clutching at straws?

The waiting is making me ill with worry.

So sorry for the long post! xx

  • Hi there, in 2020 I had a vaginal bleed.  I was 58.  Hadn't had a period for years so I was concerned.  All post meno bleeding is put on a two week pathway for cancer reasons.  I went in for a hysteroscopy and they discovered my endometrium was a bit thick so took a biopsy which came back ok.  Cut a long story short, I've now got a mirena coil, which at nearly 61, seems odd but it's doing its job.  If your smears have come back on for years I wouldn't worry too much.  When you found the blood on the paper, don't forget front and back are all in the same area.  Just recently, this week actually, I've had a colonoscopy as my bowel habits changed and I too found blood on the paper.  I watch it on the monitor and all's ok.  Maybe you have a fissure which you can get if you strain.  I have endometrial hyperplasia which isn't cancer and to keep the lining in check, the coil is there.  Hope this helps.

  • Thanks so much for your very quick reply, I really appreciate it.

It was definitely from my vagina, I checked the area carefully and it was on the speculum the day after but only on the side of it.

Absolutely nothing since though. I am hoping that as there's been no more and it was only a tiny amount, that it isn't sinister.

I'm wishing my life away and just praying that all is okay.

    Thanks so much again xx

  • I know what that's like.  It really plays on your mind.  I think as the bleeding hasn't come back, it's a good sign.  When's your appt?

  • Thank you. It was an isolated incident.

I've been run down and am recovering from shingles. It's all going on here!

My hospital appointment is on Monday. They're only doing a scan apparently.

I'm also having bloods done at the gp the same day x

  • Bloods are good, especially the ca125 that looks at your ovaries.  I had a trans vaginal scan, easy peasy, which discovered a polyp and my coil was displaced.  Hospital sorted it all out.  If you'd like, let me know how you get on.  Sounds as if you'll be fine.

  • Thanks so much, I will certainly let you know how I get on.

I really do appreciate your replies to me x

  • Polyp caused a one off bright red bleed for me, and I ended up on the 2 week pathway. They are a bit like skin tags I was told so can twist or come away and bleed.
