Post menopausal bleeding

hi I am 51 . No period in 3 years then stared to bleed heavily . Doctor admitted me for scan . Scan showed 6mm womb lining . Ovaries fine cervix fine have been referred for hysterectomy and biopsy . I am so worried .bleeding stopped after about 4 to 5 days . Has anyone been through this I am so worried at the moment thanks

  • Morning Murf,

So, I ended up getting a phone call asking me to go in for a hysteroscopy on Wednesday morning (yesterday).

The doctor I saw this time was fabulous. She asked if I wanted to watch on screen and if I wanted talked through everything. This is what I wanted and had not been offered last time.

Everything is exactly as it should be. No cysts or polyps or anything in the least abnormal. She was very thorough. It was actually quite amazing. She was saying 'this is where the wee egg would travel down and your baby started to grow here' etc. No biopsy...which I had been dreading after the previous visit.

I did tell her that I often have a slight niggle where I imagine my left ovary is. She said that my ovaries are tucked up high, where they should be, and she isn't concerned about them. But to reassure me, she is booking me in for an ultrasound that will check all of my lower abdomin.

I feel relieved. If only I had seen this doctor the first time round.

Hope you get the appointment for your colonoscopy through soon. Thinking of you

  • Hi Flo,

That's great news.  So happy to read this from you.  You've def had better care this time and great that you can have an ultrasound scan of lower abdomen to further reassure you that everything is ok.  That's all anyone wants isn't it, some care and reassurance. Huge relief, fantastic .

I've had my poo sample results - got a call yesterday.  There was some blood detected.  Anything with a reading greater than 10 (mine's 17) gets referred for further investigation.  So I'm now on 2 week fast track for a colonoscopy - which is good as I'll get seen quickly, but obviously now worried in case there's anything nasty lurking in the colon.  Could be diverticulitis - as my GP mentioned, or could be polyps ??  Only one way to find out though !  I'm feeling more anxious about this procedure than the hysteroscopy - from what others have told me, it's not nice at all.  It's the prep before the procedure which is worst by the sounds of things - you have to eat low fibre foods for a few days before and then day before take a strong oral laxative to completely empty your bowels for the procedure.  I can't take any medications orally - always makes me throw up!! so I'm really hoping there's something else I can have .

Anyway... bye for now. I'm sure everything will be fine when you have the ultrasound, then you can relax and look forward to the school holidays.  Think you finish earlier than we do?  I've got another 5 weeks left til 23rd July - not that I'm counting of course lol .  Take care... love Murf xxx

  • Hi Flo,

Hope you are keeping well.  Just wondering if you've got a date for your ultrasound or if you've had it yet?
    Thinking of you.

What will happen at the appointment can't cope with this I'm not eating sleeping or able to concentrate on work

  • Hi Catjam,

Totally understand you feeling worried, it's always scary being referred. You'll possibly have an ultrasound first (that's what I had after I experienced a bleed - 2 years after stopping my periods).  The ultrasound is fine.  You may have both a lower abdominal ultrasound, and an internal vaginal ultrasound (which is a bit like having a smear test).  Depending on what's seen on that, you might then be given a procedure called a hysteroscopy which involves having a camera inserted through the cervix to see inside the uterus.  This is usually performed to look for any abnormalities in the uterus, and means the ovaries and lining of the endometrium can be looked at more closely than with an ultrasound.  I also had this procedure as my ultrasound showed that the endometrium was slightly thicker than the 'norm'.  The procedure is carried out as an outpatient.  You don't have an anesthetic for it, but you should have some local anesthetic given as an injection into the cervix so that it's more comfortable for you.  I also took some paracetamol about half an hour before the procedure.   Some people say the experience is awful, but honestly I found it ok - a little uncomfortable yes, but not unbearably painful - everyone is different though of course.
try not to worry too much - easier said than done I know.  But it's best to get checked out - you've done the right thing seeing your doctor.  I had some biopsies taken during the hysteroscopy, but everything came back clear.  It's better to find out though if there is something more sinister causing your symptoms - the soonest these things are spotted, the better the outcomes.
Will be thinking of you ... keep in touch on this forum, it def helps to chat with people who've gone through same worries.
    lots love Xx

  • Hi Flo,

been thinking of you today and wondering how you got on with your ultrasound?  Hoping everything went ok.
    Lots love. Xx

  • Oh sorry Murf, I missed your previous post. Schools finished up on 25th June here and we've been away. Camping in Kintyre at the moment.

I've not got an appointment yet for the ultrasound. My son has been checking the mail. I'm not worried though as the last doctor was so thorough and reassuring. I've been feeling great too.

How are you doing? Any further forward? Have you had the colonoscopy? Is it diverticulitis?

And are you on holiday yet?

    Hope you're doing okay x

  • Hi Flo,

lovely to hear from you and glad you're feeling much better, that's great news .  I've had the colonoscopy yes, not nice at all, but nowhere near as awful as I was expecting and the team at my hospital were absolutely lovely, really looked after me.  I've not got diverticulitis, no.  There was a small polyp found, which was removed there and then - and that, plus some other biopsy samples were sent off for testing.  Still waiting for results of those, but am assuming that as I haven't heard anything straight away, that everything's ok - no news is generally good news .
I'm feeling better too thankfully - abdominal pains no longer there and no more bleeding (from either end lol ) but do still get more bloated than I usually did, which is annoying when I don't know what's causing it.
Anyway... enjoy the rest of your summer hols off school.  I've still got 2 and a bit weeks left to work - finish on the 23rd July.  We've got our year 1's off isolating at the moment, so we're just praying we can get through to the 23rd without any more cases.
Take care then Flo... been lovely and supportive chatting to you these last couple of months.  Stay happy & healthy.
    love Murf xx

  • Could it be menopause related? The bloating?

It's been lovely chatting with you too Murf. Take care. All the very best for the future xxx
