What to expect at Breast Clinic appointment?

Hi there.

I am 26 years old and visited my GP last week about a hard lump I found during a self-exam. The GP said it was not a cyst or fatty tissue and has referred me to the Breast Clinic. I have my appointment next week.

I am not sure what to expect, can anyone advise? Will I receive any results on the day or have to wait any longer?

How long should I expect that I’ll be at the appointment?

I am understandably nervous.

  • Hello!

So depending on what type of breast clinic it is will generally depend on what you have done. Most of them are one stop clinics which means you’ll see the consultant who will feel your breasts for the lump and they’ll then send you for an ultrasound and you get the results from this on the day. If needed, they’ll also do a biopsy and the results from this will normally take 7 to 10 days to come back. I’d say because you’re 26, you won’t have a mammogram.

The whole process is generally done really well and is run pretty smoothly but you’ll probably be there a couple of hours. If you have any more questions definitely don’t need be afraid to ask :)

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate your explanation.

I understand that I probably shouldn’t be so anxious about this as it is an initial appointment but it is hard not to be!

I hope things are going well for you.

    Thanks
