Mammogram recall after 6 weeks

I had a mammogram and ultrasound about 13 years ago because I found a lump, advised it was a blocked milk duct. Have had breast pain over the years but more so in the last few months (I’m 47 so think I’m peri menopausal) saw my GP who said to be on the safe side she would refer me. Had a mammogram 6 weeks ago and today I got a letter saying they want to investigate further. My appointment is one week today. I’m worried it’s taken so long to recall me and now I’m worried sick. I’ve also been told I need a colposcopy following my last smear test. I’m a mess.

  • Welcome to the forum Ploppy although I'm sorry for the reason you've joined us.

Quite a few members have had call backs from their mammograms so will understand how you're feeling at the moment and I'm sure they will offer their support and share their experiences with you once they've seen your post.

It's easy to think the worst when you've been waiting a while but the delay could just be because the clinic you were seen at is very busy. I know it's hard to stay upbeat and positive in situations like these but if you can, try to stay level headed until your appointment next week. You could even ask them about the delay when you see them.

Wishing you all the best for next week Ploppy.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Ploppy,

I am sorry that you have to join us here after 13 years, only to find that you need further investigation. Still, this is a good sign that your consultant is being very thorough, which is what we all need in situations like this.

I know that this is a very scary time. We all feel afraid when we have to wait for the results of your tests. Six weeks does seem a long time to wait for breast results. They are usually back within 1-2 weeks.I am not a doctor, but I don't think that your 6 week wait will alter the course of whatever you have.  However, if there are to be further tests, you could raise your concerns with your consultant.

Many people who attend the breast clinic go home having been told that they are all clear. Only 1 person in 10 turns out to have cancer, so the odds are in your favour. There are also a number of different types of lumps. Some of these are benign, but a few turn out to be cancerous.

You seem to be right in amongst it, needing a colposcopy following your last smear test - it never rains, but it pours.

I sincerely hope that all turns out well for you. Are you bringing someone with you to your appointment on Thursday? This is always a good idea. It is also wise to draw up a list of questions between appointments, as it is all too easy to forget something in the heat of the moment.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
