Anxious - awaiting biopsy results

Hi after several months of post nasal fullness along with persistent right sided throat symptoms, fever and chills, lethargy, previous blood tests showing low white blood cell count and general unwell feeling I was referred to ent specialist.

He done an endoscopy looking at nose and throat and concluded he wanted an urgent MRI. Results of MRI showed a lymph node that was borderline size for investigation so done another endoscopy. He said I had large tissue mass and was unsure if it was Adenoid tissue or tumor tissue so I was taken in on Monday for biopsies under general anaesthetic. He took 3 biopsies from my throat area, one from nasal space and one from the base of my tongue due to irregularities the report says.

I can't help thinking the worst and have been given a date for middle of May for my results which seems very long considering everything else has happened within 12 days of 1st seeing consultant. Also the same consultant removed my tonsils 4 years ago and there was no me tion on any Adenoid tissue being present (which is normal for adults as they dissolve in teenage years) this makes me worry more that is tumor tissue, am I just over worrying or am I right to assume it to be cancer?

  • Hi MattC11,

The wait for results vary from person to person so there's no way of knowing until you get those results. I can imagine you would be thinking the worst, it's what we all naturally do, but this is counterproductive considering some things are just out of our hands. While it seems like a long wait, it'll be the middle of May before you know it, You can also try these tips here to help with the wait.

All the best for your results,

  • Hi Matt,

i hope your results were okay. I know your post was in 2019 but I have just came across it. My GP referred me to ENT because I was suffering with sinus headaches which he thought may be an effect of long covid. I went for my appointment today and the camera up my nose. The doctor at ENT said that she found what she thinks looks like adenoid tissue however she wanted to do a biopsy just to be sure. She doesn't think my headaches were sinus related and I have had no other sinus or nose issues. I'm just wondering if you can shed any light as I suffer with health anxiety and I can't stop worrying. I asked how many times she has found this and it has been something more sinister and she said that most of the time it is nothing at all to worr about.

Any comments for help would be very much appreciated x

  • Hi Charlotte,

sorry I know you wrote this a while go... did you get your results?
    thanks x

  • Hi,

yeah I got them back, it was just adenoid tissue thank god!!

    are you waiting for results?x

  • Hey,

well i am awaiting urgent biopsy!
my ent specialist made me think I'm dying (probably just the way he talks)

said it's very rare to have enlarged adenoids as an adults and that he would be very surprised if this isn't something else.
he showed me it on the endoscopy camera to me it obviously just looked like some extra tissue behind my nose.

how did you find the biopsy? Did you have it whilst asleep? And how long did it take for results?
    thanks for reply x

  • Aww don't worry! I know it's easier said that done but honestly I'm sure it will be fine.

it's less likely to be something sinister than it is to have an enlarged adenoid.

im 28 and when I went to my intial ENT apt I was told it's larger than you would expect for someone my age so she wanted it investigated. Made me feel like it was serious and I suffer with anxiety so this didn't help.

I was crying for days leading up to the apt for the biopsy because I'm very much an 'ignorance is bliss' kind of girl and said I would rather not know.

when I went for the biopsy apt the doctor was absolutely lovely, I asked him how many times he had done this kind of biopsy and how many times it turned out to be something serious and he said he had done thousands none of them had been anything bad.

I was awake for the biopsy, it's some long pincher type thing and they literally pinch and pull. They take the smallest piece of tissue from it. It just a pinch which lasted for a second, I even asked to see what it looked like I did get a small amount of blood down the back of my throat but didn't last very long.

i can't remember how long the results took to come back, but no longer than a couple of weeks. I kept checking my NHS gp app and my letters section and I saw it on there before I received it in the post.

please don't worry, I'm sure its absolutely nothing x
