Suspicious mole.. could it be cancer??

I found a raised red mark on my arm yesterday so i searched the internet trying to find out what it is, after searching the web i found information on lessions as ive had them for years, after that i checked my mole on my back that ive had all of my life, i noticed that it has changed colour. My doctors surgery is booked up for 2 weeks, is there anything i can do earlier to put my mind at rest?

  • Hi Hayley1321,

Firstly - slow down, you are getting a little ahead of yourself. Don't refer to Dr Google as it's out of date and only focuses on worst case scenarios.

Right - it's correct that any mole that changes in any way, including a change in colour, needs to be checked by your GP. It doesn't definately mean it's bad news, it's just better to get it checked as soon as possible in case it needs further examination.

The best thing to do is to make an appointment, even if it's 2 weeks away. Explain to the receptionist what it's for and ask if you can either have a call back from the GP to discuss your worries (in which case they may find an earlier slot for you after your chat) or if you can be given any cancellation before your appointment - that way you may get in quicker but you need to be available at short notice. There are mole clinics around the UK but they are private and very expensive so your NHS GP is really the best person to see.

Meanwhile, if you want more information just look at the trusted websites like this one, Macmillan and the British Association of Dermatologists. There is every chance that your mole will turn out to be fine but get it checked for your peace of mind and keep yourself busy and distracted while waiting for your appointment. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi, thank you for your advice

I know google isn't a doctor, i certainly agree there and i probably am worrying for nothing which is why i thought of pisting on here to speak to people who have experienced this.

I lost both of my parents and my nan to cancer  because they didnt catch it quick enough so i am very wary of any changes in my body

Thanks again and have a nice day

  • Hi Hayley,

I'm glad you are on the ball with changes to your body. As you say, catching things quickly is the key so I hope your GP gets to see it quickly and it turns out to be fine. x

  • Ask the Receptionist for an emergency appointment and your GP for a referral to a Dermatologist.  If cancer is suspected they have an obligation to see you within two weeks.  Good luck!
