Pain.. colonoscopy vs flexisigmoidoscopy

I'm going in for a colonoscopy this week after having a flexisigmoidoscopy a week ago and am trying to decide whether I need sedation.  Sedation would bring loads of complications in terms of having to have someone with me for 24 hours.  If I have to I can.

I had the flexisigmoidoscopy with gas and air which was uncomfortable..

My question is whether a colonoscopy is much worse than a flexisigmoidoscopy?

Thanks

  • Hi Rosy,

From experience, a colonoscopy can be very uncomfortable, when I had it done, I was sedated and still felt a bit of discomfort. I can only imagine that without sedation, it can be a painful experience. I have been referred for another one under the 2ww, and will insist on sedation.

I hope this helps, I am new to the site.

    Kind regards

    Duane.

  • Thanks Duane, any input is great. I'm new too

  • All,

I had the colonoscopy today and had loads of gas and air throughout and it was fine.

When I had the flexisigmoidoscopy I did not take enough gas and air.

Today I basically spent the entire time taking the gas and air, whether I needed it or not, and was totally comfortable throughout and was surprised that the procedure was over.

For me, the colonoscopy was easier than the flexisigmoidoscopy.

    I hope this helps

  • I second your experience in that I found the colonoscopy a lot less uncomfortable than the sigmoidoscopy. By the end of the latter, I’d nearly broken the nurse’s hand through squeezing it so tightly! I recall saying something crass and silly like “I could never be gay!”.

I hope your results come back OK with nothing to worry about. I have IBS apparently.

  • Thanks Dave.

Results are nothing sinister..I had a gastroscopy at the same session.. Just bile reflex, hernia, bleeding ulcer and accociated gastritis.

Nothing that pills can solve (apart from the hernia, but mm at not be the main problem)
