Eye melanoma

I've had a mole investigated on back of my eye, its 1.4mm thick and is being checked for growth in 3 months the doctor has said he cant say if its cancer or not and Initially was going to send me to a specialist eye cancer hospital in liverpool but got a second opinion and then decided as it was only 1.4mm thick to bring me back in 3 months. I'm 38 years old and this has only now been picked. Any advice or similar situations would be appreciated

  • HI,

I have no personal experience of ocular melanoma (mine is subcutaneous), but I do know several ocular melanoma patients. Have you looked at this website which is very informative https://www.ocumeluk.org/

Was it a doctor at your local eye clinic that you saw and who was the second opinion received from?

  • Hi Nat,

I am going for the same type of appointment tomorrow after my optician saw a 'large, irregular mole' in the back of my eye. I'm sorry I can't offer you any answers, I know waiting 3 months must be hard. I've waited 6 weeks for this appointment and that's been worrying enough. I'm 39 and I have never been told about this mole before, but this was the first eye test I'd had with my pupils dilated. I have an auto immune disease too, and I need the eye tests regularly now with a new medication I'm on. I am a bit worried, but I've read it's rare and normally affects older people. Keep us updated. Sorry I can't be more help.

  • Thanks for the reply I hope it all goes well for you. I'm guessing your having the dye test done next. I've been researching alot snd it seems that until the height of the mole reaches 2mm or more then it is just watched for growth as any other treatment could affect the eyesight. Hopefully yours will be flat which is completely normal and will just be checked every 12 months and compared for any chsnges let me know how u get on.

  • Hi

After all the tests yesterday I've been told my mole is fine and not suspicious. I have some splitting at the back of my eye under/next to the mole which is what the optician suspect it as it made it look bigger and an irregular shape. I have the splitting in both eyes and probably had it since birth and it's nothing related or worrying. He's going to keep me under the hospital and bring me back in 2 years to repeat the tests, but this is more for the risks to my sight due to a medication I take for rheumatoid arthritis. But he said he will check the mole then too. He gave me a lot of reassurance and alot more information about the risks to my sight if I take this medication long term (more than 5 years).

I hope you are as well looked after on your journey. Let us know how you get on in 3 months.

    X
