Worried about ENT appt for tonsil

Hi there :)

I am a 28 year old female, none smoker, rarely drink.

I have had some annoying symptoms with my right tonsil for probably a year now but always ignored it thinking it would be a viral or bacterial infection that would pass!! No such luck yet...

The symptoms include sharp pain alternating with dull pain in the tonsil and some rare and very intermittent right sided ear pain.

Recently I noticed it felt like I was only swallowing on the left side of my throat and when I had a good look my right tonsil looks really odd... swollen and very bumpy and some discoloration (some very pale areas).

So I took myself off to the GP hoping for some antibiotics as it was probably very infected, however my GP said there is no sign of an infection and referred me to ENT.

I've tried googling (I know I shouldn't - bring on the cancer anxiety) to get some idea of what ENT would be looking for/what to expect and maybe get a good idea of questions I should be asking, but its making me more anxious of course. Thought it might be nicer to talk to actual people? Instead of having conversations in my head nd trying to answer them with Google Haha!

Has anyone had anything similar and got an idea of what type of tests they can do on the day or soon after? And how much of a discussion the doctors tend to have with you on your initial visit? Or could it likely be a long anxious waiting game?

  • Just wanted to give you an update.

I had the nasal camera - not painful, just uncomfortable as you said. The consultant has said there is no sign of cancer. This is a massive relief. My nasal cavity and throat tissue are swollen due to indigestion and so now on omeprazol for 3 months as it will take 2-3 months to go down. Then a follow up appointments to check on progress of swelling, but no cancer.

This chat forum has been such a support for me during the past two weeks. Thank you all so much. I wish you all well and hope you get the same all clear I have had.

  • Thanks Ginny,

I do feel relieved after how my GP had reacted... always a worry until you see the specialist. So it's probably the best news I could have got so far so I'm feeling much lighter and brighter about it all. Hope i get some answers about what's caused it and my ongoing symptoms or a sore tonsil but I'm going to forget all about it until my appointment day now :)

Take care, and thank you for messaging me x

  • Thank you, that is really good advice, as even after feeling so delighted after the appointment I have realised I am continuing to experience pain and discomfort with it and and non the wiser why. So i am going to write down all the questions that i can think off and take them with me to make sure i understand everything after i leave next time incase they discharge me. Which I assume is likely unless they plan to operate.

Hope you've got an appointment by now?

And I'm hoping for you to get all your answers soon after x

  • Weird experience that nasal camera isn't it Haha!!

Aww that's great news, so happy to hear there is a simple and treatable solution for you :)

Such a wonderful feeling when the intense worry is over.

I hope the medication kicks in and works soon for you x

  • Fabulous news . What a relief for you and your family . All the very best & keep off the champagne it’s a *** for acid reflux ha ha ! X x x

  • Hiya , I know it’s been a while but just wondered what your outcome was? Did you have the tonsil removed? Hope you are ok now . I’m in the same boat and very anxious :( x
  • Hi, i also have very similar symptoms and wondered if anyone had an update. I'm awaiting MRI on Sunday. One swollen tonsil, with pain. The ENT said possible lodged tonsil stone, or cancer. Im petrified

  • Hi, hope your concerns about your tonsil are all resolved and you are well. I am having full on panic attacks about my tonsil which is disintegrating. I have an urgent ENT appointment on Friday. No matter how hard I try to think otherwise I'm convinced it's cancer and my heart starts to pound and I can't move with fear. I just want someone to tell me I'm OK, it's all been a big mistake.
