Worried about ENT appt for tonsil

Hi there :)

I am a 28 year old female, none smoker, rarely drink.

I have had some annoying symptoms with my right tonsil for probably a year now but always ignored it thinking it would be a viral or bacterial infection that would pass!! No such luck yet...

The symptoms include sharp pain alternating with dull pain in the tonsil and some rare and very intermittent right sided ear pain.

Recently I noticed it felt like I was only swallowing on the left side of my throat and when I had a good look my right tonsil looks really odd... swollen and very bumpy and some discoloration (some very pale areas).

So I took myself off to the GP hoping for some antibiotics as it was probably very infected, however my GP said there is no sign of an infection and referred me to ENT.

I've tried googling (I know I shouldn't - bring on the cancer anxiety) to get some idea of what ENT would be looking for/what to expect and maybe get a good idea of questions I should be asking, but its making me more anxious of course. Thought it might be nicer to talk to actual people? Instead of having conversations in my head nd trying to answer them with Google Haha!

Has anyone had anything similar and got an idea of what type of tests they can do on the day or soon after? And how much of a discussion the doctors tend to have with you on your initial visit? Or could it likely be a long anxious waiting game?

  • Hello my husband has just had similar , well in the throat. He had a lost voice for 8 weeks and after many visits to the GP to be told it was laryngitis he took himself to ENT privately. On the first visit they numb your throat and put a camera up your nose and down you throat and have a good look around. Normal questions asked , smoke... no drink no etc..... my husband was found on that visit to have a polyp on his voice box ( Larynx) so at that appointment another was arranged for biopsy. Try not to worry you are very young but you have done the right thing by getting it all checked out. I’m sure you will be fine. X  Ginny    PS  If they find anything treatment will be swift. Also have you still got your wisdom teeth as they can be a problem and Cause similar symptoms to what you are experiencing. X

  • Aw Ginny thank you for taking time to write a reply to me!

I'm glad to hear that they can have a good look with a camera at the initial consultation. Hopefully that means by Tuesday evening I should either have some reassurance or at least be prepared for what it could be and be more informed. Hopefully the reassured option though!!!

How long after was the biopsy scheduled for?

Hope it has all gone well for you husband!! X

  • Hey. He had the biopsy within a week and the results back the following week but..... we went privately so of course things happen a little quicker .

. X  Keep in touch and let us know how it goes. Ginny x

  • Hi, I have similar symptoms to you and have had my first ent appointment. He asked me about my symptoms, did a nasal scope for a look down my throat and referred me for a head mri which I am still awaiting. My symptoms have got worse since I saw him about a month ago so I’m seeing him again tomorrow to discuss. Hope your appointment goes okay xx

  • Hi there, ah right, so they didn't get a great idea just from the nasal scope? Hope you get a date for your MRI soon! Waiting and not knowing is so tough isn't it. I hate how my mind wanders throughout the whole day to horrible thoughts of what it could be. Glad you're getting in to see him today, hopefully this will speed things along for you!! But that's rubbish to hear your symptoms are getting worse. Hope your appointment goes ok today x
  • Ah yes of course. Private is something I am thinking about if the process could be sped up. Going to see what they say on Tuesday. Thanks Ginny x

  • Hi

I'm 38 and visited my doctor yesterday as I had indigestion, a slight sorethroat and noticed one of my tonsils was larger that the other.

He has given me opmeprazole and suggested it could be the indigestion and inflamed tonsil could be inter-related, however, he has also given me an urgent referral for ENT. It was a bit of a shock and so many questions I now thought I should have asked him.

I then did the iditotic 'googling' and freaked myself out. However, thankfully I found the Cancer Research website which has alleviated my concerns to an extent, however, it is so hard to stop thinking about it. I found myself getting upset about it this moring and I am normally not the type to do so.

Reading your posts have helped and I wanted  to say 'thank you' and I wish you the best of luck for Tuesday. It would be good to hear what the experience was like (if you do not mind) so I can prepare myself as to whta to expect when I get my appointment through.

  • It's such a hard time having symptoms and not being able to get an answer there and then isn't it!! Best thing I find is just trying to ignore everything completely until the day of your appointment. It's hard though and I'm finding that I will wake up at 3am and think... oh God it must be cancer!! And the by the morning I'm more rational again. I'm annoying myself with this Haha!

My colleague actually had the very same symptoms you are describing last year including asymmetrical tonsils and it was acid reflux causing irritation to one as she always slept on one side, and the medication worked after around 6 weeks I think.... if I remember rightly. So hoping for you its something as simple as that :)

The appointment today was fine, I had the nasal camera thing that some previous posts had commented on and it was a wierd feeling but nothing overly unpleasant and very quick. The doctor said he was unsure why one tonsil has become so large but that my lymph nodes felt ok. He said he was 99% sure it wasnt cancerous, however he would be happy to remove it and biopsy it if I felt strongly enough. I said I'm a little confused about what's best to do as I'd rather not go through a general anaesthetic and time off work recovering if it's not necessary, but at the same time if there is a risk of cancer it seems sensible to get it removed. He said he did not feel there were any signs of cancer and there we agreed to review it again in 3 months and make a decision then.

I feel somewhat reassured by this... as he said he had seen tonsil cancer a number of times before. However I'm now sitting at home wondering what the cause of the symptoms are!? So I may need to send an email to the secretary in the morning and just see if that could possibly be answered in some way maybe?

Hope you're feeling ok about things and managing to not let you mind wander into worry mode! As it's just the worst isn't it.

When is it your turn for the ENT trip??

  • London Girl .im so glad your appointment was positive. Rest assured I think if he had the slightest suspicion of cancer present he would have wanted it removed ASAP & biopsy taken. Hopefully in your 3 month check up everything is still fine I’m sure it will be. Ginny x x

  • Hi there

I know it's late. I went to an entry appt for simular symptoms about 8 years ago. It's very simple and definitely nothing to worry about. They may want to put a camera down your throat to have a look.

That procedure is simple. They put a thin cord up your nose and push it and ask you to swallow so it goes to the throat.

I would say make sure you explain your symptoms well because that's my dilemma at the moment. I was quite young and didn't speak up they did that and off I went. Now I'm experiencing Alot more problems and need to start the whole process again.

Hopefully I will get to chat to you more. All my problems are with my right tonsil.

    Love nikki
