Worrying lump

Hi,

my daughter, 17, presented with a golf ball sized lump in neck three weeks ago.

Bloods ruled out glandular fever and first ultrasound results were lymph node 4.8 x 2.0cms,

Just had another ultrasound with aspiration and a thick fluid was taken although mass is very hard lump.

daughter has had no illness or temp and now we have to wait for results of aspiration. He told us not to lose sleep because there was fluid but dismissed it as a lymph node or branchial cyst. I’m still beside myself with worry, is it unnecessary?

thank you in advance

  • Hello Draper1,

I can imagine it must be a very worrying time for you as you are waiting for your daughter's results. I hope you feel reassured by the advice that was given to you not to lose sleep over it but I can understand it must be really difficult. It is normal that you will only feel fully reassured when you have had the results back.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine for your daughter.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, thanks for asking. Today she has been discharged by her consultant. The lump was believed to be a branchial cyst and whilst waiting for an op date it decided to shrink of its own accord and is now not palpable to the touch so her consultant is happy that it must be a cyst. Over the moon as it's been a harrowing time in the initial stages but all good now. Happy New Year!
