Breast clinic referral

Hi guys - first post here!

I noticed a change in the density of my breasts a couple of months ago but didn't think much of it because both breasts felt the same. However last week I noticed a lump in one breast - so after easter was seen today by the GP! She confirmed she could feel a difference and there was a 'large' lump there but she expects it is a fibroadenoma as I have no other symptoms - eg. no pain/tenderness. It's only tender after I've been prodding it for a while so I'm trying not to do that!

So she's referred me as a non-urgent case to the breast clinic due to my age (25) and lack of other symptoms. Was just wondering if anyone else in this situation could say how long they waited for an appointment?

This couldn't have come at a worse time for me, with my dissertation for Uni due next week and having 14 weeks left of placement until my nursing degree is finished.

My GP told me not to lose any sleep over it but it's hard not too! Just on here looking for some support and guidance,

Thanks

Amey x

  • Hi

sorry that you find yourself here, referral to breast clinic is usually two week wait, whereupon you will have a mammogram and possible ultrasound/biopsies. Breast cancer in someone of your age is rare and I would take comfort in the fact that your GP thinks it’s fibro. There are lots of ladies on here that are the same age as you and theirs turned out to be nothing sinister.

i know it’s hard but try and put it to the back of your mind and concentrate instead on your studies.

    take care x

  • Hi,

Sorry too that you have found yourself here.  I am in the same/similar position too and its driving me crazy.  I went to the GP on the Thursday before Easter with a change in my breast, there is a kind of bruising on my breast that has been present for a few months and incredibly painful.  She examined me and could see it straight away, she also said the tissue in my right breast (where the mass appears to be) felt different so I have been put through for an urgent referral.  My appointment with the consultant is on 10th May.  I have no idea what will happen at this appointment so if anyone can shed any light then please help.

I'm 39 and have done the terrible thing of googling, because there is no lump as such IBC is my big concern.

To top it off I have a lot going on at home too so could not have happened at a worst time, but there never is a good time I guess.

Hope all goes well with yours Ames

  • Hi Maggie and Kimmieh,

Thanks for getting back to me! Sorry you're in this same position too Kimmieh, but we've taken the right step! Fingers crossed that it's nothing (which I was fully expecting to happen at the GP). I got my referral letter through today to make an appointment online, the clinic I wanted to go to didn't have spaces so I asked them to contact me instead. Me being me rang up to see if they had any cancellations and I've been booked in on the 1st May now - perhaps you can ring up and ask to be put on the cancellation list if you don't want to wait that long?

From what I've read from forum posts like this one is that there will be a physical examination and history taken, an ultrasound/mammogram (or both) and if needed a biopsy?

    Thanks for the reassurance Maggie,

And I really do hope yours all goes well too Kimmieh,
