Scared. Help please! Confusing one...

Hi everyone.

I’m 24 years old and have always had issues with my left breast. It’s always been slightly bigger than the other one. About a month and a half a go, I went to my Gp after finding a lumpy bit of tissue behind my left nipple. He said he wouldn’t worry but refferred me to the breast clinic just to be on the safe side. I went and told them I was also having a lot of pain in that breast. I explained my right one was fine. I told them I waited til after my period to see if it was hormonal but nothing changed. They did an ultrasound of behind the nipple and said it was nothing to worry about, just a bit of excess tissue. The pain went for a while but now it’s back. The Gp gave me antibiotics incase of infection and told me that the breast clinic know what they’re doing and some women can experience this. The pain is still here. It’s not terrible, just uncomfortable. I have been wearing tight sport bras and put it down to that but wondered why it only affected one breast.

I have googled and its telling me I’ve got breast cancer and reading other people’s forums makes me so scared. I don’t know what to do. Please help. I also have really bad anxiety, never suffered with health anxiety until now. I smoke and I’m convinced I’m going to die. It’s the worst feeling in the world.

  • Hi

I am sure you are fine if the doctors have ran tests etc. You’d be surprised what the mind can make your body feel when you have health anxiety!

However, even if it’s just to put your mind at rest, don’t let it go. Demand to have further test etc. Doctors kept fobbing my Mum off until it was too late

  • I can only offer some thoughts:  If your left breast is always slightly larget than your right, perhaps your sports bra was just too tight.  Are you left or right handed and do you do particular movements always with one particular hand or arm, like driving distances or working machinery, so could the pain  be aching muscles in your chest rather than in your breast.    Do any particular movements make it hurt more?  I smoked when I was younger and was convinced I would not live past 30 for some reason but I don't know why.  Anyway I had two more babies and am now 81 - proved myself wrong!

If it does not go away, go back to your doctor and share your worries with a good friend..

  • Hi

i too have one breast slightly larger than the other and suffered periodically from my 30’s onwards (I am now 64) with pain in one Brest in particular and had investigations over the years with nothing horrible ever being found. Initially tultrasounds were not common practice and so lead me to worry terribly. Did you see a consultant at the breast clinic if you didn’t and If you are still worried after seeing your doctor ask for a mammogram and a referral to see a consultant. Do not be fobbed off, write down what you want to say and take someone with you as extra support even to your drs appointment.
