Lump in neck, gp not concerned

ive had a lump in my neck, right side, for about 5-6 weeks. Well thats when i noticed it. I booked an app with gp, ended up with a trainee gp who said lymph gland it should go down and booked me blood tests for 2 weeks. Blood test came back normal apart from raised platelets. Gp advised retake blood tests in 4 weeks. The lump is bigger than a pea but not grape size and hard doesnt move and is deffinately not a swollen gland. Its not painfull. Im not ill generally fit and well but a little overweight. Ive had an audible wheeze for a couple of weeks and sore throat maybe abit tired although i do have 2 children 1 im sure is the devil recarnated :D and 1 asd, so this could be why im tired. Im petrified something sinister is going on and my gp thinks im a paranoid patient talking to me like im irrational at having to wait four weeks for a blood test then further waiting for an ultrasound.

Can you guys tell me what your first symptoms were and the pathway to diagnoses or all clear.

Im not sure to just ride it out and wait or insist on faster test/ultrasound.

thanks for reading and hope you all are well

  • Hi, if you have concerns about the lump then don’t leave it. I found a lump on my neck age 23, original doc suggested nothing to worry about and prescribed some tablets which reduced the size of the lump. I then moved to London from Scotland a few months later and went back to the doctor as the lump was still there. I went and had the lump drained and went back for the results a few weeks later, unfortunately it was Hodgkins Lymphoma. I had no other symptoms apart from being a bit lethargic but I thot that was due to the aftermath of shingles which I had a few months before.. Fortunately I caught it early, I had the lump removed and I only required 1 month of radiotherapy, I have now been in remission for 23 years. Cannot fault the treatment of the NHS back then and even now. Please let me know your outcome.

  • thankyou so much for your reply. I have another blood test booked for next week but im going crazy with the waiting. Im very tired all the time but im unsure if its connected. I just cant get over the wat my gp doesnt seem to be worried by this new lump and have left me so long. They have said my plateletts were only slightly raised at 580? I have no idea what that means and trying to steer clear of google from now on. The lump is still there and i think its more prominent but again this could be in my mind. Im just terrified of being sidelined if something more serious is going on. It hasnt moved or changed shape or dissapeared throughout which leads me to beleive it isnt a gland or node. Im hoping they do an ultrsound after the next blood test to get a clearer picture.

  • Hi,please go back and get second opinion! I have had a lump for 8months,asked my dr twice and she said nothing to worry about. It’s got bigger so went and saw a different dr who put me on two weeks referral for ultrasound, which I have been told I have Warthin tumor. Going today for consultant appointment which I have been waiting for! Longest two weeks of my life.

you know your body,if you feel something not right go back x

  • ok so im onto my second blood test, i went back to the gp last week for them to look at my neck. Same response gp didnt seem very concerned, but dodnt really say anything just that i need a scan and sent off the referal. Second blood test is back with receptionist phoning to make an app with gp to get the results, earliest app is 2 days away! How can they leave you waiting for results at a time like this. Im hoping it cant be to bad with having to wait? Does anybody have an experience with having to wait and still receiving bad news?

    Thanks

  • wondering if anybody has an advice/experience? So ive recently found out ive had raised plateletts since 2016, 3 recent blood test all coming back raised plateletts. Dr sent an letter to haematology asking if i need to be refered but hasnt told them about swollen lymph node (was in room when dictated) didnt mention wheeze either and described me as fit and well. He seems more concerned about blood clots than the possibility of cancer, where im the opposite. Had a phone call back today haematology want me refering to clinic but hes doing it as a normal referal still no concern about the swollen lymph node. Im so confused everything im reading is pointing to possibility of cancer, especialy ET, yet dr seems not to be. I dont want to wait weeks for a referal worrying every night, yet dont  want to seem a paranoid mess to my dr. Does anybody have any advice experience what happens next or what pathway my gp should be following?

    Thanks

  • In a 19yesr old healthy girl I noticed a lump on the left hand side of my neck after I was quite run down cold wise maybe even flu (didn't have sore throat ) I started googling the lump on my nick but besides the lump had no other symtoms but lump was still there so made an appointment with my gp who said it doesn't seem like anything worrying and put me for a full blood count which came back normal again nothing worrying which has made me feel less Anxious wanted to write this post to also make people aware that it isn't always the worst case scenario I was on this form and the internet reading basically frightening myself if you have anything worrying get it checked definitely but don't always think worse case even tho I know it's hard this page is to raise awareness which is brilliant but u don't see the positive outcomes Which is why I posted mine still to go for an unltrasound but feeling less anxious .reading ur post aswell can u not go to another gp and ask for a second opinion? Or have u already done that ? When my gp put me for a ultrasound it was a urgent referral how have u got on now are u still waiting ??

  • Hi [@Beth21]‍ I was wondering how are you doing these days? What was the outcome of all your tests?

  • So my ultrasound came back fine but my bloods kept coming back with high plateletts. Was refered to haematology, they then did an ultrasound on tummy and pelvis along with running tests for jak2 and calR, these are both negative. Ive been started on asprin daily but they are not wanting to do a bone marrow biopsy because of my age. Im not yet diagnosed with essential thrombosis but being treated for it. Thanks for everybodys support and advice along the way.
P.S i still have the swollen lymph in my neck and still dont think its normal as none of my others are. But due to bloods ect showing nothing gives me confidence.

  • @beth21 wow it's taking a while. Your last post was in April. So at this point you don't have any official diagnosis?

But I am glad that the ultrasound came fine!!!!

  • I think the propability is that its essential thrombosis, but because i present as well, they dont want to do a bone marrow biopsy. Its angers me really because i have 2 children with extra needs 12 years and 2 years one has complex needs. I have no choice other than to present as well. Some days i lay on the sofa and dont have the energy to do everyday tasks, i feel sluggish, dizzy, heart palpatations, out of breath yet before this i was running round with all the energy in the world. This has been going on since before last xmas so just over a year. My fear is my blood being to thick and end up having a heart attack ect with the kids and nobody to help. But hoping the asprin keep that at bay. Then only other thing they can do is treat me with oral chemo but that has alot of side effects so im happy to trail the asprin to see how that goes.
