Lump on side of tongue

Hi all.

I discovered a pea sized lump on side of my tongue and was referred to Maxillofacial dept. Initially i was told that it looks like trauma related because it was hard and there was no pain. A biopsy was done and the first result was inconclusive and didn't come as trauma related.  The biopsy was sent off for a secod opinion and thd result was "langerhans cell histiocytosis " i was told by the Maxillofacial consultant that its a rare condition and even more rare on the tongue and that for more details i would be referred to Haematology section. However he categorically said it's nit cancer. The haematologist didn't convince me totally that that was the diagnosis but explained what it is and said it is a form of cancer and ordered more blood tests ( the first ones were all clear), an MRI SCAN A PET/CT SCAN and a Bone Marrow test. All results will be ready for my meeting with another Haematologist on 1 May.

Since i was given this news i have been all over mentally. I was told thd tests and scans will show if this condition is elsewhere and if so it may involve chemo etc. If not than thd cyst will be removed surgically.

Anyone on here suffered this condition they call langerhans cell histiocytosis?

  • Hi Jaysh,

Welcome to Cancer Chat, although I'm sorry to hear what you're going through at the moment. Your feelings are of course perfectly natural and understandable.

The waiting and uncertainty is incredibly difficult. At least by 1st May you will have answers and a clear next step. Prior to that, try to keep yourself from worrying too much by doing things that distract you and take your mind off it. I know this is easier said than done.

I hope you find this forum useful, and if anyone else has a similar experience then hopefully they will be along soon to share.

    Wishing you all the best.
