HPV 16 AND MODERATE TO SEVERE ABNORMAL CELLS

Hey everyone, I hope everyone is having a great day:)

I know this isn't a place to replace doctors advice.

But I guess I'm just looking for some comfort or simalair stories.

I've had all sorts going through my head all day :(

So I had a smear done on the 18th of March (over 2 weeks ago)

Today I got a call from my nurse asking have I had my colposcopy appointment letter yet??

Errrrm  sorry miss....not a clue what you mean,

Nurse - well I've had your results through and you need to go for a colospy,

You are positive for HPV 16 VIRUS and you have some moderate to severe abnormal cells???

She did try and explain to me.... but I was in such a shock it wasn't sinking in......

What does this mean....can I get rid of thr HPV 16 virus??

Am i prone to cancer?  Could I have cancer.....

I'm so confused, and scared. I know I.need to sit tight and wait for my colposcopy app. But has any one have any stories of comfort. My partner is also out of his mind with worry....

I've just turned 30yrs old, only 1 child and haven't took contraceptive for 15yrs plus!

Any help much appreciated xxx

  • Hi, I had a Similar scare 3 years ago, I went to see my Dr who obviously knew but didn’t tell me that I had severe abnormalities and just asked me if I had my results yet from my smear.

I wasn’t concerned and just let it pass as I had never had a GP question the smear results before. I received a letter telling me the following day that I was positive for the HPV virus and had severe abnormalities with a separate letter for an appointment for the Colposcopy.

I was terrified as was my husband, I literally thought I would die and convinced myself I wouldn’t see my daughter grow up.

Luckily I had a appointment a few days later and saw the Professor in the clinic which again terrified me as others had been booked into the the nurse clinics, anyhow I had the test where basically it’s just a magnified image of your cervix and he them put some vinegar on my cervix very bizarre but apparently the cells turn white if abnormal referred to as CIN, he said after doing this that he was 90% sure the cells where abnormal and would need treatment, which he said he could do today or I could return to have removed after the biopsy results. I choose to have them removed immediately it wasn’t a pleasant experience but I was glad after I had done on the day.

I think it would have caused me more anxiety in the end if not. Anyway the treatment was a Large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) the numb the area via injection, it was slightly painful the injection but not unbearable and I had a nurse hold my hand throughout. My dignity left as I entered the room! But I lost most of that at childbirth anyway.

Luckily I had CIN 2 and they removed it all and I got the all clear 6 months later on my follow up smear, now I am back to 3 yearly.

The CIN is rated by levels 1,2,3 3 being the most severe but apparently these are only precancerous cells that have the potential to develop into cancer, I spent hours researching and this website helped me through and helped me understand more www.jostrust.org.uk/.../abnormal-cervical-screening-results

I found out it’s not that uncommon to have abnormal cells and the more I spoke to people the more others told me their stories, I think lots of people are embarrassed by this and so it’s not often discussed but everyone I spoke to had positive outcomes which I am sure yours will be too.

I hope my explanation doesn’t scare you, it really isn’t meant to and I hope you get an appointment soon and the answers to reassure you.

    Wishing you all the best.
