What to expect at the 1st ENT appointment?

Hi,

This is my first time posting and I’m quite nervous as I have my ENT appointment this week.

I have a lump on the left side of my neck about 1.5cms wide/ long it has been there for a very long time.

No one has told me what happens at the appointment. I am very anxious and was wondering if someone can tell me please?

Can a diagnoses be made at the appointment or will I have to wait?

the waiting and not knowing is the hardest.

Thanks

RobboS

  • Hi,

i have a chest x-ray today (Friday........as you can see, I can’t sleep!). As a bronchiectasis sufferer, apparently I’m more likely to contract lung cancer. So the night sweats and laboured breathing have me in a proper tizz!

Still, you have to get checked and face whatever music transpires I guess.

    Cheers all.

    Dave

  • Good luck Dave.

    Keep us posted.

  • Good luck Dave, at least you are straight in today and you don't have to wait.

    Fingers crossed x

  • Hi RobboS,

Well that's good news on your lymph nodes, but an odd comment about your thyroid - I was told I had an enlarged thyroid 6 years ago with some nodules on it.  The nodules were scanned and measured and deemed to be nothing to worry about.  I had a follow up 3 years ago and the nodules hadn't grown so again all clear, so it's odd you were told that it's unusual to have a nodule - my thyroid function always comes back as normal as well.

My symptoms are a sore throat for nearly a year, sometimes feels like a lump in my throat, frequently clearing my throat and my ears feel pressured.  I have been experiencing vertigo but only in ther last 6 weeks or so.  My thyroid feels big and I feel like maybe that is what feels like a lump in my throat.  The doctor did feel a lymph node in my neck a couple of weeks ago but said it was less than 1cm so she wasn't alarmed.

I just want to get to my appointment on Tuesday to get some answers x

  • Hi,

RobboS, I forgot to say what great news it was about your nodes (I’m all me, me, me at the moment and I need to get a grip!).

Ayyjaybea, the fact that it’s less than 1cm is a good sign and you should focus on that and try not to worry. I know......I talk a good game but struggle following my own advice!

X-ray done and it’s now a waiting game - praying I don’t get a phonecall within the next 10 days!

    Cheers all.

  • hi ayyjaabea

i wanted to wish u luck for today. Please keep us posted.

Regarding my thyroid they made the comment as I’ve actually got no issues with it. It’s not large it’s functioning properly I believe and my bloods say it’s all fine so to find a nodule on it seemed suspicious that’s what they said anyway. To be fair after reading up about thyroid cancer it’s very unlikely I have it (fingers crossed) all the research  shows that people who have nodules that get tested 95% are ok.

So I feel surprisingly good about getting my results next week.

Take care and all the best for today

  • Thanks Dave.

Don’t panic about ur results as u said think positive

good luck and let us know when u get ur results.

  • Well, I still have symptoms (including a new one - unexplained calf pain that I’m told is not DVT), but the chest X-ray thankfully came back clear.

I’m reassured of course, but want to be free of what appears to be one beast of a virus. Been hitting the soluble Vitamin C drinks over the last few days!

  • Hi both

Thanks for your good wishes on Tuesday.  The ENT nurse had a good feel of my throat and neck and looked up my nose and down my throat with a camera and said there is nothing suspicious to see.  I told him that I am constantly clearing my throat and he said that I am perpetuating the discomfort as every time I clear my throat I am rubbing my larynx together and irritating them - so I am banned from throat clearing (which I think has already helped).  He has referred me for an MRI scan to be sure and to include a good look at my thyroid, which is still enlarged.

So all in all a very positive check up :)
