Tongue biopsy for white growth

Hi everyone,

I'm feeling very anxious about my biopsy results for a white growth on the side of my tongue. When I first saw the consultant he said its very unlikely to be cancer and took me off the 2WW.

I had the biopsy and was told results will be around 4 weeks. I got an appointment letter through for 4 weeks time. I realised I couldn't make this appointment due to a teacher training interview so I called to try and rearrange. I was then told that this appointment had been cancelled by the secretary and in comments was 'cancelled due to urgent patient'. The secretary who cancelled it isn't in today and the person I spoke to said they couldn't see the biopsy results yet.

I'm now very worried that I have become an 'urgent patient' due to the biopsy results or does it mean by appointment was cancelled for another patient is more urgent? I'm so confused and worried now.

I am managing health anxiety but this is extremely testing. Can anyone advise me as to what this comment means that the secretary has written?

  • Hi Simistory86,

Welcome to the forum. I can't speak on what the secretary may have meant, but you should call again and ask whether that note refers to you or someone else. It's also a good idea to ask questions to make sure you're absolutely clear about what you are being told and get the name of the secretary you are speaking to, just to avoid any confusion. If you find things a little overwhelming, Anxiety UK is a great organisation that has an online therapy service.

    Hopefully that helps,

  • Afternoon, I went to hospital yesterday to see consultant about small white spot (about size of small finger nail) on the right hand side of tongue also got some red patches & soreness behind spot. Think doc said he thought it was Leukoplakia but I'm not 100% as it all happened so fast. He said doubt it's anything to worry about but to have a biopsy to be sure & id get a call in few days to book slot, got call today & booked in at end of April, my heads in a bit of a whizz!!!
  • It's good that your doctor is reassuring you. Try not to worry too much. It's also good to keep busy if you find yourself overthinking things and I hope the biopsy goes ok.

    All the best,

    Anastasia
