Breast screening

hi everyone

I have got my breast screening tomorrow.

I'm only 21 and this will be the first time I experience anything like this. If I'm honest I have been beating myself up for the past 2 weeks and feel completely anxious and petrified.

what should I expect?

will I found out my results tomorrow

  • Hello Aimee!

welcome to the group. I was in your situation a few weeks ago! It’s very natural to feel anxious and nervous but you’re almost there! I hope the wait hasn’t been too bad.

Are you having a scan and biopsy tomorrow?

I think all clinics are different, depending where you live-but if you ring the clinic the nurses there will tell you what to expect on the day. When I attended my clinic I had all tests done on the same day and the consultant gave me his opinion on my lump the same day...I had to wait for the biopsy results though.

I didn’t find the experience that bad actually and I had worked myself up into a right state! The mammogram is uncomfortable but not painful,as is the ultrasound. I have a huge phobia of needles so I closed my eyes when they did my biopsies ! you will be given local anaesthetic first and then they take the biopsies. It’s a couple of “clicks” and then it’s over.

I was lucky in that the consultant gave his opinion on the day.

If your nervous, stressed or worried do come and visit this group. Everyone is lovely and have lots of advice and support,it really has been a godsend to me the last few weeks.

Best of luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes. I’ll be thinking of you

  • Thankyou Marie

I'm not actually sure the letter hasn't gone into much detail it just says breast screening so I have no idea what to expect .

Thank you for purring my mind at ease.

I hope your biopsy results come back okay

    Xx

  • Hi Aimee

i am a nurse in a Breast unit and have been for the last six years. Please don't be anxious and worried.    I am sure most hospitals and units follow the same NICE guidelines as we do.  I hope I can put your mind at rest.  If you were my patient tomorrow you would be asked a few questions about yourself in general.  Then we would examine you and I would book you an ultrasound. You would NOT have a mammogram as you are under the age of 40.  Lots of young women have harmless Breast lumps called fibroadenomas. We confirm this with ultrasound and have information leaflets.  We only biopsy fibroadenomas after the age of 25 years old. As long as you are happy with the explanations and information given to you we then discharge you.  I hope this helps and that you feel cared for in your breast unit.  And please ask a nurse if you are unsure of anything. You can also ask the Dr to send a copy to you of the letter he sends to your gp after your scan. Good luck. x

  • Thank you so much for replying !!

That has really helped put my mind at ease. I'm currently waiting to be seen so will let you know how it goes.

    Thank you again  x
