Thy4 biopsy result

I've had a Thy4 thyroid biopsy result. I have been recommended to have half my Thyroid removed by my consultant and what I would like to know is- is this usual practice? Seems a bit sledge hammer to crack a nut? I can't believe the FNA hasn't been more conclusive.

    Hi. 

    I’m not sure what your result means... my first FNA was benign, but because of the ultrasound, they were gonna whip half out. Did you have an ultrasound that looked suspicious? 

    I had to wait anyway because I was ‘too ill’ for surgery. I had a second FNA which was atypical. I don’t believe FNA are accurate enough x 

    They finally took the thing out 7 months later! 

    You may be able to wait three months and have another biopsy. That was the option I was given.

    Hi, 

    The scale goes from thy1-thy5, so if cells are looking suspicious (you can ask for more information on your biopsy result as to what is making them want to take it out), then it’s best to have the surgery, especially at a thy4 result, I too was under the impression the biopsy would tell me all, sadly not I had a U4 ultrasound result and then a thy3F from my biopsy last week, and they also want to take half of my thyroid out, even though it’s graded one lower than yours. Once they have it out they can look at it in a better way and hopefully you get more of an idea what you are dealing with.
