Appointment after Mammogram

I had a mammogram on Friday (GP referred me). They told me I would get an appointment for the Breast Clinic within two weeks. Got a letter yesterday with an appointment for General Surgery. The consultant is a breast surgeon (found this out via google). Is this the norm? It seems a bit of a jump from the mammogram to a surgical appointment.

Ive been back and forward to GP for almost two years with breast pain. Had routine mammogram last July that was clear. Pain persisted and sometimes is worse than before. GP was going to put me on HRT recently and I happened to mention again the breast pain and the fact i hadn’t had a period in 18 months (I’m 53) should surely mean the pain wasn’t to do with the menopause. She looked like she’d never heard me mention breast pain before and referred me for the mammogram.

Pain is in both breasts. I have a lump at the top of one that I’ve had for about 15 years that’s been checked and has never got any bigger.

  • Great news - they could have handled it better so you didn’t have that worry but nevertheless very pleased for you.

    Hi Maria,

This is fantastic news. It must have been so difficult for you, when you didn't want to share this with your mum or son. You are obviously one very strong lady!

I am glad to hear that you found the forum a help while you were away. Many of us find it helpful to turn to this site rather than worrying family even further. It is also much more reassuring to hear from people who have experienced cancer for themselves.

Don't forget to check yourself regularly and, I sincerely hope that there will be no repeats for you.

Yes, I got the best news that I could and, I am still walking around on cloud nine as a result.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Im so glad i found this thread, although late to the party.

i too was referred for a mammogram in my concerns of underarm pain.

had the mammogram 2 weeks ago and received the same letter as you by the looks of it. again, feel like i can't function properly and the appointment isn't for a week! all the what ifs!

Will see what mine brings but i'm pleased to know the appointment doesn't necessarily mean bad news!

thank you for sharing your outcome

    Hi Mrs LW,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear of the worry that this letter has caused you. As you will have seen from previous posts, this sounds like an appointment to discuss your mammogram results with your consultant. Most consultants like to give the results in person, regardless of what the outcome may be.

I hope that you don't have too long to wait for your appointment, as it's agony waiting to find out. As you rightly said 'so many what ifs' and, it's not easy to deal with the unknown. You'll feel better once you know.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
