Appointment after Mammogram

I had a mammogram on Friday (GP referred me). They told me I would get an appointment for the Breast Clinic within two weeks. Got a letter yesterday with an appointment for General Surgery. The consultant is a breast surgeon (found this out via google). Is this the norm? It seems a bit of a jump from the mammogram to a surgical appointment.

Ive been back and forward to GP for almost two years with breast pain. Had routine mammogram last July that was clear. Pain persisted and sometimes is worse than before. GP was going to put me on HRT recently and I happened to mention again the breast pain and the fact i hadn’t had a period in 18 months (I’m 53) should surely mean the pain wasn’t to do with the menopause. She looked like she’d never heard me mention breast pain before and referred me for the mammogram.

Pain is in both breasts. I have a lump at the top of one that I’ve had for about 15 years that’s been checked and has never got any bigger.

  • Hi, thank you. When I spoke to my husband yesterday and he told me about the letter I thought I wasn’t going to be able to function for the next few days. Signing up here however and being able to to vent my fears has helped.

I went for the mammogram on Friday and the appointment came for General Surgery yesterday with the name of the consultant and that was it. No other communication.

thanks for taking time to reply

    Hi MissMoise,

There should be a contact number for the consultant's secretary on your letter. If not, phone the main hospital switchboard and ask to be put through.

You cannot go through surgery without knowing exactly what you are having done. You should also have a pre-med appointment before your surgery, so I expect that this appointment is possibly just to talk about your options.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Will do Jolamine and thanks again.

    xx

  • Hi- my appointment said general surgery but it wasn’t it was my meeting with the consultant after my biopsy and mammogram - I’m in Newcastle rvi - not sure where you are but if you are the same place maybe it’s just how the letter is worded :) xx

  •

    Hi Amandajane,

I thought that this might be the case, but this just shows how easily things can get confused and blown up out of all proportions.

Please let us know how you get on on when you see your consultant. I hope that it all goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi I haven’t had a biopsy. That’s why I’m confused. I had a mammogram then this letter with an appointment.

    thank you   xx

  • Yeah I understand the confusion as mine was worded like that and it confused me too but if you have had a mammogram (even without a biopsy) then I would imagine the letter is to meet with a consultant regarding your results.

i too Googled the name on my letter the first time and realised the meeting was with an oncologist so it was to discuss my results.

the hospital will clear it up for you though if you give them a call - I often receive an automated appointment before I receive any letters as my appointments have been almost daily but I just call the hospital to confirm what the appointments is for and what section I need to go to etc  xx

    Hi MissMoise,

This appointment will most likely be to tell you the result of your mammogram.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

thanks for that.  I tried to have a look to see if this consultant was for the breast clinic but there is no information like that.

I travel home tomorrow night so will be able to phone on Tuesday morning

    Thanks for your support

    kind regards

    xx

  • Hi Girls

my appointment was at 5.45 this evening. It was good news. Nothing sinister. Consultant thinks it is chest wall pain.

thank you all so much for your replies and support over those few days. This chat became the only thing that kept me sane.

I can’t thank you enough for being there when I needed someone to talk to. It was so hard being away and Not wanting to tell my mum or son (who we were visiting)

Jolamine I saw that you had good news re your test for skin cancer.  I’m so pleased for you.

    Kindest regards

    Maria
