You've done the right thing to see the doctor and it won't be long now until you see the specialist. You can find out more about hereditary factors and other risks an causes of mouth cancer on this page. 

Try not to worry too much if you can until you hear more. If you want to get help to stop smoking, it might be worth talking to your GP about it.

Welcome to the forum,but sorry you have found reason to be here. There are some great folks on here with the wisdom of experience and will be a great help to you should you need.

I have recently had surgery for oral cancer incl tongue,and am happy to answer any questions you have if I can.

What I can tell you is the questions I was asked at my early appointments, I was not asked about any close relations with oral cancer. It doesnt seem to have any bearing as my mums brother had a very advanced oral cancer(non smoker or drinker). The questionaire is more reliant on smoking, drinking habits and other health issues. Biopsy results can flag up any HPV + 16 or 18 which is also a marker in oral carcinoma if positive for cancer.

Can I give you one piece of advice? Kick the heavy smoking in.Its not as hard as you think it will be with a bit of incentive,which you do have!

I always tell people any sores lumps etc in your mouth first port of call Dentist!They are best placed to identify the lumps and bumps in our mouths.

The problem with lumps ulcers etc that have no pain or symptoms we either dont notice or ignore them as not important. I am glad you have now seen your GP and are being referred and can get the answers you need.

I am sorry to read your dad and brother suffered from oral cancer,that in itself should make you aware how it can hit anyone, cancer has no respect whether you smoke or not.
