Awaiting tongue biopsy result

Hiya

I attended oral surgery appt last Thursday after my dentist referred me for possible oral lichen planus. During my appt the consultant talked of my gums and cheeks being in keeping with classic lichen planus but what was on the left side of my tongue wasn't. He proceeded to bring a more senior consultant in to the room and said the wanted to take a biopsy of my tongue. I was totally taken aback and went into shock, i.e getting very sweaty and BP dropped and generally feeling really unwell. I questioned the second consultant as to why the need for a biopsy and did my neck feel 'normal' to which he reassured me it did.

They have told me I would be reviewed in 4 to 6 weeks.

What I wonder is:

If it comes back as anything sinister will I hear before that time frame?

As I was sent home with betnesol mouthwash (which has definitely improved things in my mouth but it is still not perfect) could this be masking anything sinister?

Thank you in advance

  • Hello Miloclarence,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your biopsy results. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for these important results.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. It's great that the mouthwash is improving things for you at the moment and hopefully you will find out more about all this very soon.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
