Repeat biopsy

Recently had my first mammogram and was recalled because they wanted to conduct further tests.  I was told the mammogram indicated a suspected benign fibroadenoma approx 1".

I had an MRI scan and biopsy to confirm this however having returned for the biopsy results I have been told the sample showed normal tissue.

I have now been asked to attend tomorrow for a further biopsy as this isn't the result they expected.

Has anyone else been recalled for a 2nd biopsy?

I wish I'd not bothered with the mammogram in the first place as I now don't trust the result.

  • Welcome to the forum Pick10 although I'm sorry for the reason you've joined us.

Being recalled is actually quite common and hopefully some of those members who have had a second biopsy will be along soon to share their advice and experiences with you.

You can also use the 'search forum' option in the blue bar above to join in on any discussions that are similar to your own but our cancer nurses will be around next week if you'd like to have a chat with them about this. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Hi Pick,

A very warm welcome to our community. I am sorry to hear that you have been recalled for a further biopsy, following your MRI scan. Doctors have to be very thorough when looking at the results of tests. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 9 years and, have had a few call backs.

There are many different types and grades of breast cancer and some will show up easier than others. Would you prefer to have another biopsy, or discover in years to come that you have had something 'suspicious', which by then might be too advanced to cure? If there is a cancer present, you are far better finding it now and treating it as early as possible. It sounds to me as if your consultant is playing safe.

I hope that your biopsy tomorrow shows normal tissue again.

Please keep in touch and let us know the outcome. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine.

I have now discovered the reason for the recall was because the normal tissue hadn't been taken from the correct area so I had a core biopsy on Thursday and 6 samples were removed. Thankfully I was calmer and able to ask more questions and view the ultrasound to see the cause of concern.

I have been very tired and a bit sore this time.  Now waiting for the results.

    Hi Pick,

I am glad that you got to find out the reason for the recall and, were calmer and able to ask more questions. It is good to find that there was a straightforward reason for the recall.

When are you likely to get the results of your biopsy? I hope that it all turns out well in the end.

Do please let us know the outcome.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Get the results Wednesday.  Fingers crossed.

  • So it's good news.

Diagnosis fibroadenoma.  Biopsy results show normal tissue.  Revert to normal 3 yearly mammograms.
