Bowel / Rectal / Colon symptoms

Hello everyone, firstly would just like to appologise if my post seems insensitive to anyone here as haven't had any diagnosis, I'm just very concerned and thank you for taking the time to read my post. I am after just anyones experience really.

I'm 30 years old, married and have 2 young children.

9 years ago, I had my gall bladder removed, due to very bad gall stones and since that have always had diarrhoea, however about 8 weeks ago I started having more solid stools, not to the point of hard constipation, just more together and less diarrhoeaey, during this time I had been getting the odd very low back ache and very low tummy ache, very much like period pains, which I dont have and haven't had for 8 years as I've been on the contraceptive injection stopping all my periods.

Anyway, I've been struggling to get my stools out, with the feeling like something is obstructing them, and like I have to push round whatever is there, its extremely painful, I feel like there is a ball shaped lump sitting at the bottom of my bottom. There has been fresh red blood and mucus on my stool, in the bowl and wiping. When I go to the toilet, I always feel like theres something there that needs pushing out even when just urinating and when I do poop like I've never completely finished. On Friday I came home from being out all day, and went to the toilet, sat for a loooonngg time feeling like I was not able to push round the obstruction, I ended up having to squat to get it out, and since that my back pain and tummy pain have been constant and really bad, and when I go to bed at night ive been getting sharp pains under my brests right on my ribs.

I went to the doctors today, she did a full examination of temp, blood pressure, pulse, heart rate, tummy which is very tender and back passage. She said I have quite a substantial fissure, but didnt say much else, she has organised for me to have bloods done tomorrow morning, and wants me to give a stool sample asap, she said to ring on Thursday for blood results which I felt was very quick as all other blood tests I've had done in the past have taken 2 weeks to get back to gp, and wants to see me next week regarding my stool sample and then where to go from there. I asked her outright is it or isnt it cancer and she said its unlikely as I'm young and my symptoms are opposite, instead of getting diarrhoea I'm getting solid stools where as most people go the other way. But then she said i cant have a cancer referral yet as I dont fit the criteria, she said if I was 60 she would be referring me, so I'm just abit confused.

Is it likely that she may have felt something but just needs to rule out other test before being able to send me or is she just trying to find out what is causing my pain? I've had a rectal exam before and that doctor said right away, I haven't felt anything so I'm not concerned, this doctor didnt say anything like that and was up there (sorry) for alot longer than the one I had before. And it's the fact I feel like I'm having urgent blood tests all though shes not said that but I've never had results that quickly. I dont know weather to think shes just being very helpful trying to get to the bottom of whatever it is, or weather shes just trying to not get me worried or stressed. She also added, if anything gets worse or I develop a temperature to go back immediately to either them or a&e. It just sounds like it's not nothing.

Any insight would be helpful. Sorry for graffic detail! Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share to help.

  • Hi,

I have recently had very similar symptoms with the lower back pain (left side) and mild period pain. I have the mirena coil fitted but occasionally have cyclical period pains.

Today I experienced blood in my stools, it was just on top of one part of the stools and bright red in colour. I have not had the constipation you have had and stools have been relatively normal really. I’m dreading the next time I need to go to the toilet in case it happens again and am very worried about going to the GP’s.

I hope you have good news and if it happens to me again I think I’m goong to also need to make a GP appointment...

  • Thank you for you reply! I went for my blood test yesterday and gave in my stool sample, so now just waiting to hear on any news, the doctor said she'd have blood test results back today when I saw her on Tuesday, but I'm not holding my breath! I've always had to wait at least 2 weeks before! If I were you though, i would go get check out, they are very professional, yes its abit awkward, but they dont make you feel embarrassed at all. It's always better to be safe than sorry! I hope everything is fine for you!

  • Update: blood tests have all come back fine. Stool sample takes longer. My tummy and back pains are really bad today. I'm really worried.

  • Hi hon my symptoms are a bit different to yours. I've had gradual change in bowel habits the other way. Mostly getting looser but with blood. Sometimes don't go for a couple of days but I have lost a lot of weight.  Yours sounds more like an obstruction or piles although I obviously have no idea and it is hard not to worry but I feel you probably have something that can be solved. If you haven't lost weight that's good.  I haven't had any pain really at all either but everyone seems to be different. I get some results tom and to say I am terrified is an understatement. But I have to face it. What I would say is don't be put off pushing for answers and don't let yourself be fobbed off Good luck in getting answers xxx

  • Thanks for your reply sweetheart! I really appreciate all input! I really hope your test results are all for the better tomorrow! I haven't had any weight loss, none which I've noticed anyway. I've been big all my life and tend to you abit anyway. The doctor said that I didnt have piles/haemorrhoids as that's what I thought it could be, but did confirm the ficher, but never said that the rectum felt all normal or anything like that, it just is abit concerning as whenever I've had examinations before of any kind they will say that feels normal etc...idk maybe I'm over thinking it? You just think she'd of said something regarding how it felt???

  • Hi, I’m glad your blood tests came back clear but can imagine what it’s like waiting for the stool sample to come back.

Im going to make an appointment next week, I haven’t had anymore blood in my stools but have had stomach pains before having loose stools just on the left side of my tummy which go after I’ve been to the toilet. Like you said, best get it checked.

Positive thoughts for all of us going through this

  • nicoleh77 I've had the same past few weeks with lower back and abdomen I'm 25 and panicking as I had blood in my still past couple of days. I don't know what to expect. how are you now

  • Hi

I just wanted to know how you got on with everything and how you are?

I am 32 and experiencing a lot of what you have listed here although no blood.

I have been having abdominal aches/cramping/discomfort for the past week now and back ache (all of which feel like period pain)

I haven't been able to poo properly and go to have the tiniest bit of poo which isn't normal for me. It's like I haven't got it all out and with all this cramping etc, my body is telling me to poop but I can't get anything else out and it's so uncomfortable and effecting daily chores/activities etc as I am in some discomfort.

Also, I feel bloated constantly yet still have an appetite. Occasionally might feel abit nauseous when my aches are at their worst. No weight loss but it has only been a week. I have the worst health anxiety so this isn't helping me to relax but I am worried. You hear of young people getting cancer and I am scared.
