suspected skin cancer

Hi, my husband 67yrs of age has a red nodule come up on his neck which has steadily grown over the last 6 weeks and now measures 1.5cm . He originally went to the doctor who referred him to a dermatologis at our local hospital and he was seen within a week. The dermatologist is uncertain what is it but he is going to remove it and do a biopsy , i asked if he thought it was cancerous and he said he thinks it is. i was very dimayed to find out he wasnt going to remove it there and then but has said we will get an appointment within four weeks to remove it. My husband has a history of cancer he had t cell non hodgkins lymphoma 14 yrs ago and had chemo and radiotherapy and was cured. He also had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his leg 10yrs ago. As you can imagine with his history i am worried sick especially as this nodule has doubled in size which suggests it is malignant. I am terrified that in this 4 week frame this could possibly spread to lymph nodes etc. I would like to know what other people think about the fact we have to wait 4 weeks to have it removed and then possibly another 2-3weeks for biopsy results. Am i panicking unecessarily .

  • Hi harassed,

I'm sorry to hear your husband has up to a 4 week wait for this surgical removal. It's rare for nodules to be removed at the initial appointment as they need complete removal which necessitates theatre time. Only scrape biopsies tend to be done there and then because they are not invasive. Sadly plastics and histology departments are much busier than they were a few years ago and this is impacting on the wait for surgeries and biopsy results. What once was a 2 week wait is now a 3 or 4 week wait. This doesn't help you and your husband worrying but I know that, should a consultant think the mole/nodule/lesion has the capacity to be very aggressive, they arrange for a quicker removal. There is every chance that 'up to' a 4 week wait may, in reality, be a little less.I

Having a history of cancer makes it a more worrying time but hopefully, should it be skin cancer, it's been caught early and the results aren't as bad as you anticipate. Not all types of skin cancer are invasive (as you will know with your husband's bcc) and research and treatments are moving apace so please try not to worry too much. Please let us know how he gets on and good luck.

  • Hi Angie, thank you for replying , I hope you are right thinking that we may get an earlier appointment if the doctor is at all worried. I may be panicking a bit as it has only been a week since we saw him. He seemed a bit confused as to what it could be as it has grown so quickly which is not usual in most skin cancers. Anyway hopefully we will hear something soon.
