Needle biopsy

(I'm in Italy, so please don't think that this will happen in an UK hospital, at least I hope not).

I had a needle biopsy yesterday on my Lymph Nodes above collar bone. The doctor used 4 needles, 3 with a 'chopper'. It wasn't too bad, I felt pain, but it was quick and supportable. I put ice on my neck and went home.

I asked what I should do regarding work, and was told I would be fine and could go back to work the next day.

In the afternoon, I went straight to bed, but woke up with intense pain. I walked to my GP, who had his nurse take a look at my neck. I had an apple size lump, and my Doctor sent me to hospital.

At hospital, ER, I was left for three hours with an ice pack on my neck. I asked for something for the pain, but was given nothing. I was then sent for an ecoscan, which has to be the most painful thing I have ever had, and I have had many surgeries and many kidney stones. I screamed all of the way through it.

The ER doctor changed shift, and my new ER Doctor was horrified. She put me on a drip which helped. I have been told to rest and go back if the swelling doesn't go down.

I spoke to the doctor who did my biopsy yesterday, he said 'strange, noone has complained of pain or swelling in years, come in for an eco if you feel like it', to which I put the phone down and asked my husband to call as it seemed horrible to have to justify my immense pain.

I am just hoping that the swelling goes down. I'm taking pain killers and resting. I am going to write to the hospital to complain. And go back to my GP t'row morning to ask him to check the swelling.

Has anyone experienced a painful needle biopsy? I have a good pain threshold. I am not a moaner. I was not expecting to be in so much pain and to be so swollen.

  • Hello Rachel,

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with your needle biopsy and with the way you're treated at the hospital by the first doctor.

Hopefully others who have gone through something similar will soon be along to share their stories with you and offer advice.

You mentioned that you're going back to your GP yesterday to check the swelling so I hope you got a better experience this time around and you are now at least a bit more comfortable than you were two days ago.

    Wishing you the very best,

  • Thank you Renata.

I'm feeling much better. Now I know I had a 'core biopsy', which I wish I had been prepared for mentally. I would have bought ice packs!

My family doctor is awesome, and has written to the hospital to complain on my behalf. The oncology day hospital ward have apologised for not advising me I had had a core biopsy, not a simple needle one and for sending me home without any kind of documentation, or a phone number to ring to get advice on what to do if there were complications: the doctor who did the biopsy said that he hadn't had complications in years, so didn't think it was necessary.

I'm signed me off work until Monday, or until I can get dressed alone. Now I look like I have a lemon under my skin in my neck, but smaller than the apple it was on Monday. So that is good news.

Now I am just waiting for the results. 'Just'. At least having a pain in the neck has taken the edge off waiting.

So now I know. If I have any more tests or precedures, I'll ask for written documentation on what treatment I have had (...just in case I ever find myself in the ER again, unable to say what treatment I had had, or the name of the doctor) and a phone number in the case of complications.

    This is a learning curve.

My dog is over the moon to have me in bed with her. And I am over the moon to have her snuggle in to me. My daughter and ex husband have been so supportive. I had no idea how to open the discussion of 'biopsy' with my daughter, but with all of this happening, it came out and has been actually a godsend.

All is well that ends well!
