Mammogram recall with family history

I’m under the family history clinic as my auntie passed away from secondary breast cancer when she was 50 having been diagnosed 5 years previously and my mum being diagnosed 5 years ago (she’s hoping to get the all clear in few months). I’ve been having annual mammograms for 5 years my most recent last week and 11 months prior to that.

Yesterday I received a letter advising that a fuller investigation is required.

I am absolutely beside myself especially as I am 49 so roughly the same age as my auntie. I can’t feel any lumps or bumps and my breast look normal.

My emotions are flipping from “it’ll be nothing and I’ll be fine” to “I don’t want my children to witness the suffering I did watching my auntie”.

i also have a 19 year old daughter so I’m concerned about her chances!

apologies for the long post.

  • Hi Helene and welcome to Cancer Chat.

It's completely natural, and understandable, to react in this way as many of our members who have had a recall can tell you and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

Fingers crossed the further investigation brings good results when the time comes Helene.

    Kind regards,
