Thyroid surgery

Hello. I am new to this country and by accident the dentist discovered a lump on my neck. I had an ultrasound and fine needle biopsy which came back with the indeterminate result of 3 meaning I need to have the nodule and rightnside of my thyroid removed. The dr said if the nodule is cancerous I would then need to have all my thyroid out. My question is would it be possible to have all my thyroid removed at the first surgery? I don’t want to have two surgeries. I realise if entire thyroid is removed I will have to take replacement thyroid medication for the rest of my life which is not ideal but having two operations and a longer recovery time is not ideal either because I don’t have many holidays accrued at work and can’t afford to take time off without pay.

  • Hi Miona and welcome to Cancer Chat.

Your doctor will be in the best position to answer your question so be sure to have a chat with them about this and any other issues that may be playing on your mind.

[@Anchor1707]‍ has had experience in this area so hopefully they'll be along to offer their support and advice now I've mentioned them in this post..

I'll have my fingers crossed that this nodule doesn't turn out to be cancerous Miona.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Miona,

Just picking up your post and noticed Steph mentioned that I had experince in this area.

So yes, I was diagnosed with throat cancer last June and am now still recovering 4 and half months later.I have a blog and kept a log from the get go, warts and all and has helped quite a few people. There is also a section with handy tips and also a link to another blog from a lovely lady called Hazel(Radioraz)

I have posted the link for you below and it might be helpful for you to have a read and come back with any questions at all and I'm happy to help in any way I can.
I understand that many people have financial commitments and work that can be problematic due to the nature and length of recovery this treatment can potentially take.
To be honest your consultant will plan your appropriate treatment acording to what is best clinically and most appropriate for your treatment and any other issues like work/finance would not be a factor considred. Your treatment and health is the most important.
Do you have a compassionate leave policy at work ? Do you have a sickness scheme wherby you are sick and on pay/half pay?
Failing that I think there may be some financial assistance available but its not my area of expertise and would not like to offer any solutions that I dont know of. I am aware there is a section on this site that you can get information on what benefits/help is available and who to contact and it might be worthwhile having a look.
Thar said, I'm afraid that you do need treatment and your health comes first but I totally undertand that it can cause additional agnst when faced with some additional financial and work problems.
I hope you can get some helpp with this and find a workable solution for yourself.

Meantime on the actual treatment and recovery, I have listed my blog and I hope that will help raise some awareness and help give some nderstanding of the real road ahead.

Please keep us posted on progress and come back to ask anyting at all
