I noticed that I had a small indent in my right breast, and on further inspection felt a lump. After speaking to my GP, I was referred to a breast clinic. I was examined and had a mammogram and ultra sound and biopsy. When I returned to the original doctor, they said there was a 2 cm lump. They wanted to remove, they would have the biopsy results back in a week and I needed to come back then. They said they didn’t like the look of the lump and I had breast cancer. Now on reflection I feel confused. As I wouldn’t have thought they could diagnose cancer without the biopsy results. Could I have this wrong? Have I misunderstood? Is there still hope it’s not cancer? Still 4 more days for biopsy results.

    I am sorry to hear of the uncertainty surrounding your tests at the breast clinic and the worry that this has caused.

    I was told the same as you on my first visit to the breast clinic. The consultant told me that he couldn't be sure until he got my biopsy results back, but he was pretty certain that it would be cancerous. Unfortunately, he was right. A year later I had a second bout and attended a different surgeon, but he said the same and, again he was correct. When the radiologist sees the pictures generated by the ultrasound, lesions will show up and it can be pretty obvious that these are cancerous.

    I suspect that, when you work with cancer for so many years, you will probably develop a sixth sense about the disease. There is still hope that your surgeon is wrong this time and, I sincerely hope that this is so for you.

    Are you taking someone with you when you return for your results? I would strongly recommend that you to do so if you can. It is also helpful to draw up a list of questions for your consultant.

    My cancer was diagnosed by radiologist doing ultrasound.  He then took biopsy to send away for staging which was stage 2 and they found it was oestrogen receptive.  I think they can tell it is solid and not, as a cyst is, fluid filled.

    Thank you for taking the time to reply. I was going to go by myself, I quite like to get things straight in my own mind before I talk to others. But I will take my husband along this time as it will help to have a second pair of ears. Sorry to hear you had to go through this twice. Are you well now? X

    Hi Ljd,

    I am glad to hear that you are taking your hubby along with you. This will probably help both of you. I am usually a very independent person too and, like to sort things out for myself before telling others. The problem with this situation is that we all get 'het up' when attending an appointment like this and, it is a well known fact that we only retain a small amount of the conversation held during your consultation.

    I always bring my hubby with me now, and also involve him in helping me to draw up a list of questions for my consultant before every visit. This ensures tha I don't forget to ask an important question.
