Prostate Cancer

Hi

This is my first posting so apologies if I ramble .

I suffer from general health anxiety which has been heightened over the past 18 mths by rising PSA levels .

I am 54 yrs of age with no family history of cancer . However in Oct 2017 I passed a kidney stone which resulted in scans along with my first PSA test with a score of 3.9 .

The urologist identified benign kidney cysts and confirmed I am a stone maker, as such  I often get dull aches from my side

i was advised to have another test in Jan 2018 which resulted in an improved score of 3.2.

Repeat test in Sept 2018 with a higher score of 4.2. This resulted in my private consultant carrying out a MRI scan of my prostate . The results were very reassuring showing no cancer , lesions  etc....

As a consequence I decided that rather than continue going private I would go for further tests through my GP in the future .

My GP suggested  I take a 10 day course of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin) before the test to eliminate any underlying infection

Last week I confidently went for a PSA test at my local surgery and to my horror it is now at 5.73

As you can imagine I am now frantic although my GP remains calm and has suggested another test in 3 months .

I have been under immense stress recently as my father is critically ill so not sure if this may have a bearing on results

Any views appreciated

Kindest Tony

  • Hi Tony-D,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

It's normal for your levels to go up as you get older, so you may be seeing this over the couple of years of having the test (see more information here under Results), but it's good that your doctor is calm and keeping an eye on it with you. Stress can affect your overall wellbeing, so if you feeling a little overwhelmed there's some great tips and resources at Anxiety UK or you could speak to a consultant online.

    I hope this helps,
