Awaiting full biopsy results after "suspicious" FNA

Hi all, just looking to see what experiences you had of having a "suspicious" pathology result after a fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, hinting towards lymphoma:

After finding a lump in my supraclavicular neck area, I was referred to see a consultant which took an FNA biopsy of it. The result after 2 days was that it was "suspicious" (Category V) for lymphoma, which led them to have an excisional biopsy the next day. They also arranged me to have a CT scan rather than the originally planned ultrasound, in addition to the blood tests (which I'm told were clear). The consultant told me after surgery that his "gut instinct" that it was lymphoma.

That was now 2 anxious weeks ago - during which, due to me having no symptoms whatsoever and a clear blood test, I've started to ponder whether the "suspicious" result is going to actually turn out to be negative once the full, excision, biopsy result is back!

This may be just wishful thinking, especially considering the consultant's view, but I was just wondering if anyone had a "suspicious" FNA biopsy result but turned out to be cancer-free in the end?

  • Hello koalabear,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your biopsy results. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for these important results.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have had a suspicious FNA biopsy result before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

It is good news though that you haven't had any symptoms and a clear blood test and we are keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks for your kind words, Lucie.

It's now been 3 weeks and still no sign of results, after hassling the Consultant's secretary several times! This seems like ages - does anyone else have any experience of waiting this long? And what could the wait mean, if anything?

  • HI Just wondering how you got on I have had the same experience today,

  • Hi Annaniall, my doubts were confirmed in the end - I was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma after around 4 weeks of waiting for the result. Looking back the waiting and the unknowns of it was the most anxious time of the whole experience - once I had started treatment I was in a much better place, knowing what was ahead and that it was very treatable. I had 3 months of chemotherapy and have been in remission since August last year.

Of course, I'm not sure what your exact circumstances are, so the above may be irrelevant to you! Have you had a needle biopsy yet? What are your symptoms? More than happy to talk about my experience if it helps.

  • Hi, sorry to jump on this post but I'm due to have an ultrasound and FNA on Monday and I'm very anxious about it..

I noticed a lump under my left ear and jaw. Doctor referred me to ENt who did an endoscopy, said everything looked fine, the lump is around 2cm and he requested a scan and FNA, between my ENT appointment and FNA will only be 7 days and the urgency of it has unnerved me a little.

I hadn't had any other symptoms apart from feeling tired but I'm a busy mum and I work who always seems tired so didn't mention it to the consultant.. silly I know..

since my first appointment Iv had a couple of night sweats and now have the feeling of my throat being poked from the outside that makes me feel like there's something stuck when I swallow.. I also have a constant ache in the left side of my face and neck that doesn't ever go away, even with painkillers.. I did tell the dr about this.

what was your first symptoms and how did you find the FNA?

any info would be great.. as I'm sure many others do I'm driving myself insane with google

  • Hi Me124, I know it's really unnerving for someone to say you're on the urgent route! Of course it might be nothing but it's good that things are moving quickly if there are any suspicious things going on! And I know how difficult it can be not to spend hours googling...

Looking back, my symptoms started with a couple of night sweats back in Oct '18, but didn't think anything of them at the time. Though they were proper sweats - waking up drenched from head to toe with the bedsheets drenched too. I didn't feel a lump until around Feb '19 - in my lower neck, around the size of a grape, and it was hard and couldn't be squeezed as enlarged lymph nodes can when you're ill. The CT scan later showed that this was the latest in a 'chain' developing in my chest. Sounds more scary than it is, honest I couldn't feel a thing! The fatigue I had was very limited, nothing I would have usually said was out of the ordinary.

I was referred on the urgent suspected cancer route after seeing my GP in early March, then had a FNA 10 days later (I didn't get an ultrasound). The procedure itself was absolutely fine - as the name suggests the needle was absolutely tiny so you will barely feel it! A small, slightly yellowish bruise came out a few days later, but that was all. After a few days it was confirmed as 'suspicious' so I had a full extraction biopsy the next day to do more conclusive tests on that. That was basically going under anaesthetic to do a tiny incision in my neck, which you can't see at all now! But they'll only do that if the first FNA was 'suspicious' as I said, so don't worry too much!

    Any other questions do shout!

  • Thank you for replying! I'm ok with needles so I'm sure il be ok with the procedure.. It's the outcome that makes me anxious.

hopefully it will all be ok
