Enlarged right tonsil and swollen inner mouth

Hi guys, I'm new here but reading some of the posts it sounds like a great community. Sadly I am a bit concerned about my right tonsil. It looks very swollen and has a white spot on it. Yet I have no pain or tonsillitis symptoms really apart from at night when my throat is a little sore.

I'm 4 days into a 7 day course of antibiotics but they have made no difference. If anything the problem has got worse and the right side of my mouth is swollen inside now too.

I never smoke and don't drink much in the week but I drink quite heavily on weekends. So terrified it could be tonsil or mouth cancer. Dr. Google has been adding to my anxiety so I have banned myself from googling!

Going to go back to my doctor for a 2nd opinion but would love to hear anyone's thoughts here.

  • Hi Odello

am sorry to hear of your symptoms and can understand your anxiety.

So trying to look as an outsider and as someone who has been through treatment for throat issues, my own observation is that you may be jumping the gun here and causing yourself unecessary additional agnst just now.
You are only 4 days into a course of antibiotics and they are given for 7 days for a reason so a little premature to say not working yet or making no difference.
There are so many reasons why you can have a sore throat and symtoms you describe and the majority of them and times are not sinister at all.
None of us here are medically trained and able to diagnose you.Not dismissing you but please let antiobiotics take full course and duration and I would suggest you go back to your GP if your symptoms continue.

I would also urge you to please stay off Google as there is so much mis information out there and it's quite easy to goggle any symtom and come up with a serious self diagnosis. I hope you stick to your own google ban.

I hope all clears itself, but your next obvious step is to book another GP appointment and take from there. Please come back to us if you have any further questions and update progress re GP.

    kind regards
    ian

  • Hi Odello

I can only 2nd Ian`s advice to you. Also to say yes stay off Doc google.

Firstly sometimes it takes a couple of courses of antibiotics to clear things, also a white spot on tonsil is usually a tonsil stone(harmless).

Secondly if you have read a bit on Doc google you will have read the harms of booze and not just your liver. Im not saying dont drink but think about cutting down, you have good reason to now you have educated yourself on the risks of head & neck cancer. Just maybe you have got away with it this time and your problem clears up. This is one cancer thats on the up,less smoking related and more alcohol and hpv infection related worldwide.

One bit of advice I always give is pay a visit to your dentist they are well placed at spotting anything amiss. Gps often refer patients to their dentist.

Going through treatment myself at present and yes this is a great community here. We all welcome you here anytime and will answer your queries where we can based on our own experiences, not as medical pros.So feel free to ask anything.

Have you noticed whether you inhale through your mouth rather than nose, that can cause sore throats esp at night.

I hope this resolves for you and you dont find yourself as one of the" club ". x

  • Thank you for you kind reply and I totally agree. I am jumping the gun! I think the zero pain and no other symptoms shocked me but thanks for your sensible and sensitive thoughts. I am taking your advice!

    Best regards

  • Thank you Clara. Wise words and I will certainly be reviewing my booze intake and cutting back. I have calmed down and am thinking more positively now so will let the antibiotics run their course and take things one step at a time!

Thanks for your support. Really appreciate it.
