Melanoma removal

Hi all

My father-in-law has told us that he has a mole that has been bleeding for two months. He went to his GP who he says has told him it's likely cancer and referred it to be removed.

He is now saying that he has an appointment at the end of June for it's removal. Everywhere I look it says max 2 weeks for a suspicous mole to be removed after referral.

Any advice on what myself and my partner can do next to support him, or check some facts, would be very appreciated. He is stubborn man who regularly thinks the worst. But it doesn't match up that he has a suspicous mole AND a very late appointment.

Please help! Thanks

  • Hi I think some body should have a word with the doctor it sounds rediculus (might be spelt wrong) like you said should be 2 weeks sometimes you need to check with a nother doctor. All the best.

  • Hi,

If it's a mole that's bleeding and his GP said it may be cancer he would have been referred under the 2 week rule. The 2 week rule is for the initial consultation with a dermatologist who would examine the mole with a dermascope. If it is thought to be cancerous he would then get an appointment for it's removal for biopsy. Has your father-in-law seen the dermatologist and the June appointment is for removal? This is a long wait - removal is usually done about 3 or 4 weeks after the initial consultation. If that's the case I think he should question the long wait.

However, if it's not a mole but a spot or lesion, it may be another form of skin cancer - basal cell carcinoma (rodent ulcer) which isn't dealt with as quickly as it's not invasive. Could this be a possibility? Have you seen the mole? Where is it on his body (bcc usually grow in the face, head of ears on men). This may account for the long wait.

  • Thank you so much, this is really useful information. It's on his back, and I haven't seen it myself but maybe I will do.

I will try to get some more information from him about whether it's a mole or a spot/lesion.

    Thanks so much

  • Thank you so much Billy, that's good to know I'm not being pushy! Will try and get a second opinion.
