Worried about bowel cancer

Hi all,

I’m a 23 year old male and id just like to start off by apologising in case this comes across as offensive/insulting to anyone who is battling this horrible disease but I just figured this was the best place to voice my concerns before heading to my GP next week.

About ten days ago I started with bloatedness in my stomach and went to the GP a few days after as it wasn’t subsiding. I had also felt like I hadn’t been fully emptying my bowels from time to time but my usual habits hadn’t changed (no constipation/diorhea and wasn’t going noticeably more often or less).

Anyway the doctor examined my stomach and also did a DRE and said both were clear which initially put my mind at ease. As someone who has always been pretty gassy/bloated as have my parents I was pretty happy leaving the GP knowing everything was fine.

However a few days later (about a week ago) I started with abdominal cramps (like the type you get when you’ve got a stomach bug) however I haven’t been sick at all and my bowel habits have stated normal. The pain has been off/on all week but more on than off. Going to the toilet has occasionally relieved it for a short period and I haven’t noticed any triggers.

It seems to be at its worst in a morning after being asleep/laying down for long periods. There’s been no blood in my stools and I’m still producing normal shaped/coloured stools.

Just wondering if I should be concerned about cancer at all just from abdominal cramps alone?

thanks and sorry again if I’m being dramatic

  • Hello Andy,

Don't worry you are not at all being dramatic and I can appreciate that it must be worrying for you if symptoms persist or you don’t feel that your problems are being diagnosed properly. You did the right thing in going to see a doctor but if you are unhappy with the way you are being looked after by your current doctor or if you feel these additional persistent symptoms need looking into again, you may want to consider getting a second opinion. You can find out more about this here

I hope you find the reassurance you need soon.

    Best wishes,
