Lump on neck

Hi everyone,

Roughly two weeks ago I discovered a lump around the size of a golf ball (an irregular shape) on my gland, on the side of my neck (just above my collarbone). I went to the doctors and she said it was most likely a swollen gland, to give it two weeks and only go back if it’s hasnt reduced in size (sounded like something that happens often and isn’t anything to worry about). Two weeks later and it hasn’t reduced in size and it’s quite tender so I went back and it’s an urgent referral to hospital. It’s just shocked me a bit as I got the impression at first it wasn’t anything to worry about. Does anyone know what I should be expecting at hospital visit? Or what it could possibly be?

  • Hi,

sorry to hear your news, how are you now after the treatment?

I have also had a lump come up on my neck and had several CT Scans and bloods, bloods show high white blood cells.

I am waiting for an appointment for the biopsy, nervous as hell.

  • Hi,

I feel better than ever. We were under the impression I didn’t have any symptoms before being diagnosed but since finishing treatment we’ve realised I was always ill with a cold/ cough/ tonsillitis etc and very tired. I now don’t suffer any symptoms and I haven’t been poorly once (still on anti viral and antibiotics though).

I hope it is good news but if it isn’t modern medicine is honestly amazing  I have my fingers crossed for you.

  • Hi just wanted to ask how is it going now? Is it all going well? Please respond, I'm wishing the best for u

  • Hi, I have finished treatment and been given the all clear. I have been in remission 4-5 months now and showing no signs of relapsing. I'm pretty much back to normal (work/ hobbies etc) just have to be a little bit more careful with germs. Thank you for asking

  • Hi just wanted to ask how is it going for? Did the results come back fine?

  • Hello. I hope you are well.

My boyfriend has a huge golf sized lump on the front of his neck, slightly towards one side. He often has small bumps on his neck that come and go and we thought nothing of it. He also suffers badly with night sweats but again we didn't think it was something serious.

He went to the doctor today because of the unusual golf sized lump on his neck and he was told that it is suspected cancer. They also found some on his groin area. He has an urgent appointment next week for further tests. He is in his early 20s.
I feel physically sick. I don't know what to do. It feels like my world is ending. Please do you have any advice? It would be lovely to talk to someone who is going through something similar.

  • Hi, sorry to hear about what's going on.
Have the doctors explained the process to you? Everything is fast tracked so although you feel like you're worrying for a lifetime, they get things sorted very quickly.
It's easy for someone else to say not to worry but try and do your best to enjoy the time before (possible) treatment.
I use to think it was worse to be diagnosed at a young age but actually a young fit body tends to cope a lot better. Have a good read up about it. If it is Hodgkin's lymphoma then it is a cancer that responds very well to treatment and the chances of it coming back are very small.
I hope this puts your mind at ease little bit.

  • Hello,

thank you so so much for your response. He has further tests on Tuesday so we do not know if it is cancer yet but the doctor said they suspect it due to symptoms. He is going to the ENT unit next week to be seen and further investigated. The more I read up on this, the more I am convinced.

If he is diagnosed with non/hodgkin's Lymphoma, I'm scared it'll be at a very late stage as he has had these symptoms for about 2 years now. The only thing that made us go to the doctors was the golf sized lump on his neck. I'm very scared. I'm so happy you responded and I have someone to talk to about this. I feel sick thinking about what they will tell us. Will he get a diagnosis next week from the ENT unit? Do they do a biopsy the same day? The doctor didn't explain much. They just said suspected cancer and he has an appointment next week at ENT.

    thank you!
