Lump on neck

Hi everyone,

Roughly two weeks ago I discovered a lump around the size of a golf ball (an irregular shape) on my gland, on the side of my neck (just above my collarbone). I went to the doctors and she said it was most likely a swollen gland, to give it two weeks and only go back if it’s hasnt reduced in size (sounded like something that happens often and isn’t anything to worry about). Two weeks later and it hasn’t reduced in size and it’s quite tender so I went back and it’s an urgent referral to hospital. It’s just shocked me a bit as I got the impression at first it wasn’t anything to worry about. Does anyone know what I should be expecting at hospital visit? Or what it could possibly be?

  • How did your lump feel? Could you move it ? And did you have any other symptoms ?

I have a small lump just under my collarbone. Painless and moves around easily. Having a scan late this wee. Very worried

  • Very very tender which is uncommon apparently, doctors think it could’ve been sitting on a nerve. I’d say it was squishy but because it was tender I can’t say I ever pushed it around that much. No symptoms, perfectly fit, healthy, happy 21 year old.

I’m not sure under the collarbone is a typical place for lymphoma (I might be completely wrong). Google the lymphatic system and it’ll show where they run (in the neck, armpits, groin etc). I hope everything goes well for you.

  • I’m glad you are getting along well.  I’m 22 and have had small olive sized lumps under my chin (right and left side) since October.  I’ve been very worried, had many blood tests done (some showing high white blood count and then going back to normal), ultrasound, and CT.  None of the imaging could find the lumps and doctors have a hard time feeling the lumps because the lumps move away every time you press on the chin.

should I still be concerned even though it’s been almost a year, no size changes, and the lumps are hard but movable?  Thanks

  • I wouldn’t have thought doctors would leave it this long if they feared it was something like lymphoma. I had my big lump come up in March and within a month had a second smaller lump. I think you can get aggressive (quick growing) and non agressive (which is slower) but more often than not it’s a fast growing cancer. You’ve had ultrasound and scan and I think if you had it one of them would show it up. The doctor who done my ultrasound was nearly sure it was cancer after seeing the pictures on screen (still had to do biopsy to confirm and then later a scan). Maybe say to doctors you are worried and they will run more tests or give you a better explanation

  • Hi

today I have been to see my gp as I have a lump on the right side of my neck just by my windpipe it is the size of a pea quite round not painful to touch my gp is arrangeing for me to have a scan i played it quite down said it didnot hurt no syptoms etc but now am feeling quite worried and dnt know what to do any advise would be great thanks

  • Sorry to hear that. Hopefully your scan comes around quickly so that you’re not left worrying too long. I mean everyone’s different and I’m sure a lot of health professionals say it’s best to talk about your worries etc but I done exactly the same. Almost convinced myself it wasn’t going to be cancer. I carried on going to work and found I enjoyed being there more as was kept busy and kept it all very private (only my parents really knowing what was going on and how serious it could be).

The only reason I say about not sharing your worries with all friends and family is because once I knew what mine was and I made it public (including costumers at work etc) I became very emotional. I’ve never been one to cry and I would just tear up out of no where so would worry about getting upset at work etc.

Maybe confide in someone close to you so you have someone with you at appointments (a parent, boyfriend: girlfriend or a close friend) but keep it private until you know as don’t want to worry lots of people. It’s entirely up to you though. Hope this helps

  • thankyou I have contacted the doctors no appointments till next week but told me to ring first thing in the morning and i should get appointment that day thanks again.

  • well went back to my doctors today seen a differant gp and she said straightaway i will refer you for scan etc on the 2 week rule this means i will get seen by then also might get a biopsy if needed anyone heard about this 2 week rule before.

  • That’s good that they’re getting things sorted. Yes, I was told my referral/ biopsy/ ultrasound will be done within 2 weeks. I could be wrong but I think if there’s a possibility it could be something serious/ may need treatment soon (that doesn’t mean it is, just means it could be) then they sort of fast track you
