Lump on neck

Hi everyone,

Roughly two weeks ago I discovered a lump around the size of a golf ball (an irregular shape) on my gland, on the side of my neck (just above my collarbone). I went to the doctors and she said it was most likely a swollen gland, to give it two weeks and only go back if it’s hasnt reduced in size (sounded like something that happens often and isn’t anything to worry about). Two weeks later and it hasn’t reduced in size and it’s quite tender so I went back and it’s an urgent referral to hospital. It’s just shocked me a bit as I got the impression at first it wasn’t anything to worry about. Does anyone know what I should be expecting at hospital visit? Or what it could possibly be?

  • Hi I hope you are doing well?  I'm 33 years old, I had full blood count done,  this came back in abnormal so my doctor ask me to have bloods done for every 3 months as my mum and aunt suffers with underactive thyroid!  My nan passed away 9 years ago, after being diagnosed 6 weeks before with Hopkins lymphoma, she was in her 70s!   My doctor wasn't able to do a physical examination as I have was shielding for asthma, today I was checking my neck and came across a golf size lump side of my neck, sore throat for a month and neck pain!   I am worried as I have back pain, pain under my ribcage and I'm very tired (sleeping more often in day and night!   I'm scared that I have what my nan had!

  • Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I'm doing really good thank you. Sorry to hear about your nan and what is going on. Have you tried contacting your doctors? Regardless of the fact you should be shielding I think they will look into this for you. Even if it's just say a video call to start with. Lumps in the neck are very common (can just be your immune system) but if they last more than 2 weeks it's a good idea to get it checked out. I would call your surgery or 111 and I'm sure they'll find a way of safely looking into it for you. Hope you get it sorted.

  • Hi,

I found a large egg shaped lump in my neck a few weeks ago. i went to the doctors and he put me on the 2 week pathway. i tried to get a blood test but it was to take 2 weeks. i called the doctor and he got me to the surgery the next day to get the test done. after a couple of weeks, blood test came back ok but needed to see the ENT consultant. he put a camera down my nose and checked me out, then said im going to need a scan. again that was anouther couple of weeks. as i was panicking, i paid to go to a privite hospital to get done sooner. This was completed but they said i would need a biopsy, so again, that put another 2 weeks onto the wait.

I attended the local hospital today for the biopsy, painless procedure. the Doctor took out a complete syringe full of puss from my lump and made it half the size.

At the moment it looks like a cyst that has gone bad. i will follow up on anything but i just wanbted to put this outthere as so maney threads go unfinished.

I cant say dont worry as i have been in bits for the last few weeks, just wanted some positivity and maybe can help sombody.

  • Thanks so much for posting! Fingers crossed the results come back fine but the fact there was puss in the lump sounds positive.

I myself had a 3-3.5 cm lump come up about 2 months ago (I'm the same place as before) that was not going down. Was referred to hospital for an ultrasound and it turned out to just be a swollen lump node. It's still not gone completely but the hospital have given it the ok so I'm fine about it.

Thanks for posting, it's always nice to hear other people's stories/ the outcome. Stay safe.

  • Hi, just wanted to ask, how is your boyfriend now? Did you found out what was causing the swelling and night sweats he had? Pls let me know. Wishing the best for you and your boyfriend!

neck lump to our suspected Head and Neck Cancer Clinic. I have arranged an urgent ultrasound scan for you which will be performed now about 4 years ago I had my  implode  Takeaway because they  expected it to be cancer but thank god it wasn’t but now it’s come to the same side and I’m worried I’m a mum of 4 kids and I’m on my own I worried for my kids and my self I’d love if someone could get back to me please as I can’t sleep and I’m always crying thinking of my kids

  • Sorry to hear this.

It might be comforting knowing that a lump and high white blood cells can just be your immune systems response to a virus.

With regards to your low red blood cells I know when I was diagnosed my red blood count was normal. I think low red blood cells can be common (a sign of anaemia?)- what is your diet like?

Sorry to hear you're going through a difficult time. I hope you get answers soon.

  • Hi

I've been worried about a lymph node I have! it doesnt hurt and its firm, it moves a teeny bit but its been there for ages, and I can never tell if its getting bigger or I'm convincing myself. For the past year I've had a few health issues I've never had previously in my life. I'm only 18.

My GP refused to look at it because of my anxiety and said 'I was young' and I'm worried noone is listening. Any advice as to accessing a diagnosis?

  • Hi,

Is it a lump of a lymph node? You can have lumps which can be cancerous or non cancerous and you can have a swollen lymph node. A lump is either a gathering of cells which may or may not be cancerous or could be just puss or something whereas a swollen lymph node is the lymph node itself that is actually swollen.

Have you looked on the nhs website to see if the health issues you have had are symptoms of lymphoma?

Has your doctor outright refused to have a look or refused to refer you? I would say if it's that he/ she has had a look and refused to refer you they have a pretty good idea it is just a swollen lymph node and not anything sinister. The only thing you could maybe do is ask to speak to a different doctor regarding it? If it's that your doctor has outright refused to have a look then I would speak with someone from your surgery as I'm not sure that should happen.

I think it's easy to forgot that doctors do want to help us and they wouldn't knowingly let someone go about their day knowing they could potentially have worsening cancer so just bare that in mind- I'm well aware doctors can make mistakes though.

Hope this helps. Maybe talk to a parent or close friend and explain how you're feeling too.
